I'd love it if our front 4 is stout enough Smith can play SAM on first down. I know it might be crazy early but he has to get traded. Ray-Ray is still a solid backup to Foster and Bow.

Great problem to have. Maybe keep him for depth? You never know if Bow goes down or Foster hurts his shoulder. Remember the nightmare of special teamer Nick Bellore as our leader on D? Brutal.

I really like Ray-Ray and think he'd be a good WILL in this system. If he doesn't win the spot he can backup the WILL/MIKE(maybe even SAM) spots.
Great contract, I think Smith is instantly expendable but I don't think there gonna do him like that and could end up playing SAM.

Smith's value might be just as much tied to helping install the defense as his actual position on the field. Considering our msssive cap space I'd think they'll keep him on board as an insurance policy and a coach on the field

Smith played both WILL and SAM in Seattle. He started at SAM while Irvin was suspended and subbed in for Irvin on passing downs during Irvin's first two years in the league. He's not the prototype for the SAM position by any means and wasn't anything more than average when he played there but the 49ers gave him a pretty decent contract with 11 mil guaranteed and clearly envision him as a starter so I'd say they plan on moving Smith to the SAM for now. Here's an article that talks a little bit about Smith's time at the SAM linebacker spot.

Yeah, Smith has played the SAM before in this defense so he'll probably slide over to there. I project this on our base running downs.
SAM: Malcolm Smith; Ahmad Brooks
MIKE: Navarro Bowman; Jayson DiManche
WILL: Reuben Foster; Ray-Ray Armstrong
That said, if Ray-Ray proves to be one of the best 3 LB's, it's possible the team looks to go this route (something to consider):
SAM: Navarro Bowman; Ahmad Brooks
MIKE: Reuben Foster; Jayson DiManche
WILL: Ray-Ray Armstrong; Malcolm Smith
I almost prefer this lineup.
SAM: Malcolm Smith; Ahmad Brooks

We know the contract that the team gave Smith insinuates that they envisioned an important role for him and of course that was all before they knew they'd grab Foster in the draft. I wouldn't be surprised if Brooks still starts in base at SAM and Smith subs in on passing downs. Run defense is not Smith's strong suit. Depending on how the old man Brooks looks this camp, he may have a chance to start at SAM in base and slide up to end on money downs, where Thomas slides inside to rotate with Buckner and Armstead, especially considering Lynch's ongoing conditioning concerns. I know Armstead is being tried out in different spots but I still believe in the end, he'll spend most of his time on the inside. Brooks could still end up our best edge rusher at 33 when the dust settles as sad as that sounds.

And don't forget Harold is also moving to the SAM as well to compete with Brooks and Smith. Brooks is going to have to kick ass at 33 if he wants to make this team now. But if it's close, youth wins that battle.

Smith's contract pretty much guarantees him on this squad for at least the next two yrs...ray ray in the one that's expendible with the addition of foster. All should be on the team for this season.

Yeah I know Harold is supposed to compete there and he was playing a little bit better at the end of last season but he still hasn't shown me enough to believe in him just yet. Brooks has continued to be a reliable if not steady player in his 30's. No doubt your right though, IF Harold comes to life this camp then youth and a cheaper cap hit will always win out.
