Wow. I think people are looking at Kaepernick through some ridiculous love-goggles () and failing to judge him objectively.
His overall performance was good, but his complete body of work today did nothing to distinguish him CLEARLY above Smith as a guy who should be starting for the rest of the season.
Kaepernick is awesome, but he played the worst defense in the NFL. Let's look at the positive versus negative:
Positive:
-Speed put pressure on defense and his running was got us some first downs and a TD.
-Bigger arm allowed him to fit in some of the intermediate throws better.
-He displayed the fact that he is a right-hander that can roll left and find receivers perhaps better than any other QB in the league.
Negatives:
-He had multiple delay of game penalties
-He had an ugly fade that was nearly a 100-yard pick 6.
-He had an INT straight to a defender because he didn't use his eyes and blindly threw a pass that an experienced QB wouldn't have.
Other notes:
-We played the worst defense in the entire NFL and scored less offensive points than the opponent.
Overall, B+ game from Colin. But not enough to win me over yet.
I agree with most, and would add that Colin didn't get sacked once today where Alex would have at least 4 or 5 times. I think Colin has better pocket awarness and short area quickness to avoid sacks. I do think Alex is better at getting us into the right play at the line, espeacially runs. This is not the worst defense in the league right "now", which is when were playing them.
Yeah the Saints defense is notthe "worst in the entire NFL"..They played well at home with thier crowd. held Gore under 100 yds, and sent a lot of blitzes at CK.
Try to imagine if Alex had played in this game. He would have been sacked 2-3 times at least, had more than a couple delay of games, maybe threw an INT. But I know he would have not converted alot of those 3rd and Long's as a result of all the penalties. And he definatley would not have outplayed Drew Brees at home. Kaepernick did, He lead drives for touchdowns, spread the ball around, got first downs and a touchdown with his legs, called audibles in the crowd noise, and made good throws all over the field. And it was his first start on the road in a hostile environment against a good team.
I feel for Alex...but Kaep is makes plays that Alex simply cant and it makes a big difference in the way the offense looks. I say it again...Alex Smith is our Drew Bledsoe. Unfortunatley for him, he had a badly timed injury and now the younger guy has stepped up and opened our eyes to what the offense can be. What if Kaep is our Tom Brady of 2001...Who do you go with Coach????
