Look its obvious that were way too cute with the pistol as well as other formations and i think with all the substitutions going on during each drive and as it got later and later we looked overwhelmed and that obviously led to all the false starts, turn overs, sacks etc. We looked confused and fragmented.
For alex's assesment: i dont know if it was his hurt finger or not but he needs to talk to tom house and get back into how he was planting-bending his knees while positioning himself for a touch throw like he did against Green bay and Detroit. he would take his 3 or 5 step drops and then plant-bend his knees-square up and throw. yesterday he was hucking it up like they were playing 500 when he gd well knows that its better to take the sack and punt it. Harbs said it best in a qb coaching video thats on youtube: (if your end result to your offensive posession is a kick then it was a success because you didnt give them the ball. wether that be a punt field goal or kick off.
No more coming out on first down in a pistol, flysweep or super load tightend set and then passing without even play actioning it. (if you do, do it only once or twice a game but definatly not when your down more than 14 and when the defense knows you want/need to pass.
Our running plays for the most part were working in our standard sets, why not keep leaning on that like they did to us to keep the defense totaly honest then mix in a little play action. If we are going to pass pass pass then why try to pass in these crazy formations with 2wr 2 te 1 rb. or 2wr 1te 2rb and never on third and a mile on any down with 10 or more yards to go to get the first.
Everyone that is ripping on our defense needs to consider that for only allowing 26 points with as many times as we gave them the ball and theyre overall T-O-P I mean heck they could have put up a 40 or 50 burger! one thing regarding the defense is agian too many stunts and actionary audibles on the dline, tomsula is giving justin smith to much freedom on where to line up based on their presnap formation.
Part of their sucess running was that they delayed the handoff and then delayed getting to the line of scrimmage - we would get too ahead or overpurse and it usually resulted into us either takling them behind the line of scrimmage (which did happen allot) or we would be past the play and at a awkard angle the hole would open up and because were respecting the pass and big play the safties were too deep to takle anything less than a 8-10 yard gain
First we need to quit blitzing so much and so often blitzing up the middle its not working even with both Inside linebackers double barreling the same hole. Its not working our blitzers are running into our own guys (j-smith) because he has the freedom from fangio to choose which gap he wants to shoot or stunt on and sometimes our blitzers end up colliding into the back of him or other dlinemen its just frustrating to see us send 6 and not get there.
The defense needs to do what it did against det and gb and thats put 4 down linemen leave bowman and willis to assist the run for the front four and drop 5 in coverage leave one saftey shorter usually whitner to play lower zone but be the saftey net for any big run or screen that gets through. Goldson is just as good at doing this bet he plays center field better than whitner so.
DLine-soap at nose wrecking havock on the guards or center, justin doing likewise on the opposite side as an end but not stunting every play. ray mac sub in rotation with soap and jsmith and the same with brooks and aldon but at end and on obvious pass situations both as an end.
willis-bowman run defend their side of the field and the secondary assignment: key the te-slot-hb that runs a flat route, underneath or in the flats also look for the screen and dont over pursue the screen.
Coverage-play 2 safties 12-15 yards deep or more rotate the press on either X or Z. but if theyre having success with one guy like a calvin johnson or cruz and theyre lining him up in all posistions as a wr, press the hell out of him! where ever he lines up keep your safties firmly over the top and press him. and when they adjust to this by putting cruz in a tight bunch set. keep the assignment and press him as best you can with the given 5 yards then release and check for a screen, assist the run or pursue the qb find an opening in the pocket. they did this with cox, rogers, and i think mcbath throughout the first two games.
