Greg Roman, is he really good?

It worked. Washington stayed on Kilgore even though he was never a threat. I doubt Kilgore would have even caught the ball if it had been thrown.

That was hilarious

That was pretty funny to see. He was dictating the defensive personnel. Then set up formation to attack the area of the field to Kilgore's side. Nice pass to VD so that worked.

I'm glad Roman stuck with the run vs the Cards, though that credit might go more to Harbaugh. That was the only way that long drive worked in the 4th. The schedule may have gotten 'easier', but the defenses the 49ers are facing aren't slipping much with TEN up next. Roman needs to continue mixing the run types and playing Hunter. It will always pay off with a good Gore performance in the 4th.
A lot of people complain that every play that doesn't work is a bad call or "too cute."

The same thing happens with pass rush. Every game people complain like mad every week that we're not getting any pressure. We have the 2nd highest QB pressure rate over the past 2 years.

People say Gore is done all the time. Then he has a great game and maybe they're quiet for a week.

A lot of people on this board don't like Roman's playcalling. Everyone else who follows the NFL see's him as one of the best.

Fans here, and everywhere, seem to ignore that their awesome team is playing against other NFL teams. Everyone in the NFL is awesome at football, and everyone makes mistakes. Just because Gore had a 200 yard game, it doesn't mean that he's losing it when he has a 50 yard game. Just because our D got 7 sacks and a shutout, it doesn't mean that they suck now because that week they went sackless and let someone put up 30.

He is probably overrated outside of this board and underrated on this board.

Sometimes
He's gone about as far as he can with a college offense.
I figured I better post this here as well:

Maybe you guys aren't fully understanding the type of college offense we run here so I'll provide video for you: Review the play at 26:40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=_LHrltRaudY#t=1605

Here you will see CK in shortgun with Gore in the backfield next to him on the left. Davis is split out wide left at the X...Boldin goes in motion from right to left and Baldwin is split out wide right at the Z. Vance McDonald is in the slot on the right side of the ROT. Upon snap, Baldwin sprints straight ahead from the Z, Boldin sprints ahead from the X and both McDonald and VD cross. Boldin immediately draws a CB "and" a S, McDonald draws the MLB (deeper) across the field with him and VD is free (underneath) thanks to Boldin drawing the S. CK hits VD instantly in under 3 seconds for 12 yards on 3rd and 5. Good thing b/c Watt crushed CK just as he released the ball.

BUT, at no point were ANY of the receiving options (Boldin, McDonald nor Baldwin) a true receiving option. There is no "progression reading" here. Gore stays in to block Watt. He is NOT an outlet either. This play is all-or-nothing. If everyone does their job, it's a first down. If it's not, it's a sack or CK is off and scrambling to which, Boldin, McDonald, Baldwin and VD then, all have to ad lib. And we are a terrible ad lib team.

So again, this is not b/c CK is poor at progression reading or "is locking onto receivers." It's b/c there ARE no progression reads built into the offense. It's a college, anti-WCO. This isn't Roman dumbing down the offense b/c CK isn't getting the offense or is struggling right now either. THIS IS OUR OFFENSE. It has nothing to do with the WR's and their "lack of separation." In fact, if this play doesn't work, it means the non-receivers (aka decoys) didn't draw the defenders they were supposed to...or the Texans secondary played it perfectly.

If you're a DC all you need to do is play press coverage, jam the WR's at the LOS and throw a monkey-wrench into the entire play. In fact, if you guessed correctly who to cover (in this case, VD), all you have to do is jam/cover him tight and Watt has a sack. This is exactly how Seattle plays us. And many, MANY of our formations and alignments can be deciphered pre-snap (and you will see the DB or LB call alignments accordingly, pre-snap esp. b/c we take so long to snap the ball).

If you really want to have fun, before each offensive snap, write down pre-snap if you think it will be a run or pass. Later you will get really good at not only identifying whether it's a run or pass but WHO the pass will go to.

he doesn't understand what to call at times and he has a bad habit of getting cute just to do it.

the main example is the red zone. this is where you make your money imo.

he has been bad at calling plays there and its hurt us.
just last sunday instead of 14-0 it was 6, one play and we're losing.

2nd and goal from the 5 in the biggest game and he doesn't think we can get 5 yards running the ball in 3 plays with this team our offensive line and frank gore.

so no he's not underrated he's just being called out for some of the obvious things he doesn't do for unknown reasons.

why is kyle williams playing and why doesn't hunter have a bigger role as well as macdonald we don't even use the weapons we have while everyone is complaining and trying to make trades.. for what? so they can ride the bench or get 3 snaps?

he isn't the worst but he is no genius he needs to stop having brain farts for series and quarters and entire games.

indy has been giving up 5 yards per rush the entire season.

for whatever reason the best running game in the nfl decided to not exploit that.

those type of things are inexcusable at this point.
Ok, lets assume that Roman is simply a college OC and not a professional OC. Who would you want to replace him?

potato ass cards. I would've left him uncovered. Worst case, they throw to him, he probably drops it. If he doesnt, he'll gain 5 yards then probably fumble.

We have an OL that can dominate, a top NFL RB, a top NFL TE, very reliable #1 receiver, a tall deep treat in Baldwin, and a ideal slot jitterbug in Kyle.

Yet we are not able to put hardly any of these in situations to take advantage of mismatches.
