Defense currently top 5 in pass defense and rush defense

http://www.nfl.com/stats/team

We are currently #5 in rush defense and amazingly ranked #5 in pass defense (thanks to sanchez) but you cant rule out we played rodgers and stafford. We are #3 overall behind houston and seattle (5 yards per game shy of 1st place).

We all know that we're outstanding against the run, but do you think we can keep a hold on the top 5 in pass defense? Especially since we yet to have our 6 games against the NFC-W QB's?
If anyone is interested in more stats (even though its early) got these from a thread just put up on the official board:

-49ers have allowed 65 points, good for 4th best. HOU, SEA, and ARI are the only teams that have allowed less.
-49ers have scored 104 points, good for 12th best.
-Overall Point Differential of +39, which is 5th best.
-Rank 19th in overall yards, with 346 per game (best in division).
-We have 9 players who rushed the ball for us this year, and only 1 of them has under 4.0 YPC...Alex Smith, with a 3.9 YPC. But this also counts numerous kneeldowns at the end of the Packers and Lions game.
-Despite spreading the ball around (Gore has only 53% of the carries), Gore is still on pace for 1300+ yards (currently 326 yards at 4.9 YPC).
-Our long run of the year is 30 yards. Despite running well on other teams we are not breaking off big plays...more of a consistent chunk of yardage on most carries. That long run of 30 is also our biggest offensive play of the year, period, and that was a Kaepernick run against the Jets with 2 minutes left in the game. -Our leading receiver- Michael Crabtree with 21 catches and 198 yards. He has 13 first downs and 103 of his 198 yards are created by YAC, indicating he's thrown to short and asked to pick up yardage down the field.
-Team as a whole is averaging 5.4 YPC on run O, while only allowed 3.2 YPC on run D (including Ponder's QB scrambles).
-We are top 5 in both Rush AND Pass D, as well as points and yards.
-Of 5 receiving TD's, Davis leads our team with 4. The only other player to score a passing TD...Randy Moss.
-For all the new weapons we added, Gore and Davis combine for 7 of our 11 TD's (with Moss, Kaepernick, Hunter, and Rogers combining for the other 4).

- Bowman is on pace for 180 tackles (Willis 140)
- Aldon is on pace for 64 tackles and 18 sacks (would be team record)
- Smith's QB rating of 98.1 would be highest for starter on team since Young in 1998
- 8 of Lee's 15 punts have been downed inside the 20 - 49ers are 3rd in league with 167 rushing yards a game
- 49ers average 10.3 yards per catch which is 28th in league
- 49ers have 114 pass attempts, 3rd fewest in league
- 49ers are 3rd with a 30.4 yards per kickoff return
- 49ers are 9th in first downs with 91

I don't think we hold onto top 5 but we should be better than last year (were we 16th?).

A few reason why it will be tough for the pass d:

1. Teams won't attempt to run on us much. We will have many more pass attempts on us. There are teams that are probably good in pass defense but are giving up a ton of yards rushing so you run on them. Not every team is balanced and if you can pass on them easier why run into a brick wall?

2. We will have blowouts where teams will be passing it like crazy trying to catch up.

3. The secondary might be better than last year but we are playing better QBs.

4. You get those late garbage time plays. Not saying this was one but look at the Bell 50 yard screen against the Lions. One person in the wrong position, you have a guy at say 150 all night and all of a sudden that really changes the stats.

5. Our style... we play to keep everything in front of us. We will let you dump the ball off... catch it underneath... we just don't want to give up the huge play. Dump offs really add up in yardage. We aren't going to contest every ball... some times we will let you just have it. example 3rd and 20... we give you cushion, give you 10-15 of the yards but you aren't getting all of them.

In other words, we have a pretty damn good football team. I wish our yards-per-catch was higher though.
This one surprised me.

- 49ers are 9th in first downs with 91

I guess it makes sense since we are moving the ball in short chunks and not big plays to score. Still I wonder what our 3rd down % is? It's pretty low I think... means we are doing well on 1st and 2nd down. Although, the lions game I think we did well especially at the end of the game (with crabtree) on 3rd downs.

Three of the top four in points allowed in the NFC West. Wow.

Tackles plus assists I assume, but still. And yes, he is on my fantasy team. lol it is even infecting the defensive players now.

Great stats love the positive, reality based assessment of our excellence!

Yeah but the stat kind of got thrown out of balance with the 18 tackle game against minnesota. He had 11, 8, 8 in the others. I didn't put them up, someone else posted them on the 49ers.com board. It's early so ones like that aren't can be a bit deceptive.

Yeah, our offense has it's work cut out for it this year. Fortunately though, we have a defense that is just as good as Arizona and Seattle.... and our offense is better than both of theirs. Should be some good NFC west games this year!
Good Stuff
love the stats when they shine on our team.
Thanks - very informative.
Kinda pissed that we aren't #1 in rush defense. I guess that Vikings game f**ked things up.
