I don't know about all year but the defense has definitly regressed over the last 3 or 4 games.

I think the bye had an effect on the D. It should get back to normal Monday.

How about we mention the fact we are 3rd in total yards allowed with 292.2 ypg and FIRST in points with 14.1 ppg. Both up from last years respectable 308.2 ypg and 14.3 ppg. The huge boost in pass defense from 16th last year to this years 3rd place to go along with the before mentioned and I would say the defense has given a little to take a little.
This defense is better than last years.

One thing I've noticed with this year's defense is that it feeds off of the rest of the team and turnovers. Perhaps that's true of all defenses, but only way I can explain the Jekyll and Hyde performance this year, compared to last year where without our defense playing lights out we maybe win 9 or 10 games.
I think the complacency of knowing they are a good unit, having a better offense this year, and having teams specifically game plan against them has contributed to an overall drop in performance which has been offset to a degree by being in the 2nd year of the Fangio defense (Whitner alluded to improving in this regard and perhaps he is right).
It's awesome to get turnovers, but the suffocating defenses of past that you can trust with your life controlled the LOS, got to the QB and had a decent enough secondary to limit big plays. Last year's 2nd half of NFCC 49er defense did just that with 0 turnovers.
Let's be patient and see what develops. The Giants are in a crazy offensive slump right now....but if I were a Giants fan I'd be pretty confident that at some point they will turn it around and be dangerous.
I feel the same way about this team's defense, esp. in big games.

First, we have 2 losses and a tie, but none were any worse than the effort by the defense last year in the Cowboys or Cardinals games. And yes, we should of won that game and it's bad that we didn't, so yes, we should be a little worried always.

I was watching NFC Playbook and they referenced the Niners and Rams game. What stood out to me is they kept showing our Dline (mainly Soap) getting man-handled. They even showed Justin getting pushed in to Willis by a journey man lineman from the Jets. I think Bowman and Willis are going to have a hard time as long as our Dline keeps underperforming. Last year was a long season with very little rotation and every game teams are giving us there best shot. I really believe they are wearing down.

Welcome to the 2012/2013 season to J Smith, Soap, and RayMac. Last night they played how they did most of last year. Willis and Bowman got back to attacking. The defense as a whole look like they woke up form a funk. Gonna need another huge performance next week b/c the Saints are hot.
