I think the appearance of regression is there because of the lack of sacks and INT's. However the stats appear to be the same in the other categories with some even better than last year (pass defense). The Chicago D looks like the D we had last year.
losing parys and the 2 rookie OLBs really has hurt depth and the ability to rotate in fresh bodies...which in turn has eroded the quality of the pass rush and rush defense

And the quality of tackling.
The defense has definitely regressed from last year. They needed to step up today against the hated rams and especially after Alex went down. They come out flat and we're down by 14 before the end of q1. Then after Alex goes down and Kaep gets us the lead late in the 4th qtr, they let the rams score and retake the lead. That would NOT have happened last year. Say whatever you want, but pass rush is nothing unless we blitz, we aren't getting the turnovers like last year and opponents are able to run against us much better too.

The defense needs to get back to form of last year as we progress toward the playoffs - no better time to start than next monday night against DA BEARS - who will say THEY have the best defense in the league. C'mon defense, where u at?
Defense did OK. They tighten up in the second half. It's the 2 converted punt fake that made it seem bad for the defense. Those were stops for the defense but special team fcked up. That last scoring drive by the Rams, the defense had them stopped on 3rd & 8. Without that, they held the Rams to 3 pts in the second half.

At 14.1 ppg allowed we're slightly better than the 14.3 allowed over the course of last year. Although last year's defense seemed steadier, whereas this year we allow 3 points one week and 24 the next.

Justin Smith has lost a step.
Patrick Willis got paid. Hasn't been the same player since...

Blame falls mostly on Soap and Mcd for this game, they looked wore down. Line looked improved when dobbs was in there TBH. Both willis and bowman were off today, but thats because their oline was dominating on the interior.

Justin smith is still Justin, he just gets more attention than any of our other defenders, and brooks and aldon had good games.

Then you have the secondary which played poorly as well, especially rogers, and the safetys didnt have alot of impact.

Draft has hurt us bigtime.
Defense will step it up in the postseason

if we make it

This season's defense may have regressed but the offense hasn't progressed either. No doubt, we still have the best defense in the league. However, the defense has been a little inconsistent this season and that's where the offense has to come in and bail out the defense. The defense has been carrying this offense for far too long now, it's time for this offense to step up and bail out the defense when they have an off day.
Point blank J Smith, Raymac, and Soap need to play better. All 3 are under performing, and it's causing issues all over. Can't stop the run and can't create any pass rush unless it's Aldon on a stunt.
it is mystifying that justin smith has 0 sacks, though he deserves a share of aldon's and mcdonald has a 1/2 a sack...also t,brown and c,rogers no ints this year...
