Crabtree looking sharp in camp

Crabtree is risking the loss of his starting job. Remember Shawntae Spencer last year? Got injured and lost it in training camp and he never got it back. This year, we have too many good receivers to just hand the starting job to Crabtree. If he doesn't practice much this training camp, he won't be the starter.

Yep. And this is the primary reason for why I think the injury is real and that fans are overreacting a bit. I think Crabtree legitimately tweaked something. It's understandable to miss a practice or two to make sure he doesn't further aggravate the injury, but he has to know that we have receivers that can take his playing time away, if he doesn't hurry back.
That's my hope, anyway. I have never been happy with all of the practice time missed by Crabtree in the past, but he came out this year on time and with a great attitude. For that, I'll cut him a little slack and believe that he will be back at work in Wednesday's practice.

Yes, I agree that he probably is injured. But the fact remains that if he doesn't get on the field, he won't be the starter. It stinks to lose your job over an injury, but that is the way of the NFL.

I can agree with both you to a certain agree^^ but who will take his place? Imo Crabtree is top 2 WR on our team at the moment. I don't see him losing playing time to Manningham, Williams, Jenkins, Ginn. Reports all off season, and thread title indicates Crabby has been looking solid all off-season.

If Crabs isn't on the field this pre-season, if he is out-performed in live practices due to injury or otherwise, do you think JH will start him anyway, or do you think JH will play him based on his production leading up to the GB game?

Good question. If say Manningham or Williams come out and play impressive while Crabtree sits? I really don't know to be honest. I think a lot of it would depend on the circumstances. On one end you can't just let Crabtree sit on the bench, on the other these guys are playing well and they really don't deserve or need to lose playing time.
I personally feel that Crabtree is a good receiver but at the same time I think he NEEDS these practices. His talent level is there, he just needs to be there to gel and mold with this offense while they have the time to really work out the wrinkles.

We must keep this in mind: JH & Baalke brought in accomplished vets Manningham and Moss, drafted a WR in the first, and signed 3 rookie WR's off the street to boot. Plus, JH is rotating all WR's in with the starters. And trust me, when a coach at any level of football do that that's a major sign as to how a coaching staff views that position, and it's never good for the incumbent "#1". Knowing all that if I were Crabs I'd be at Defcon 1. You wouldn't be able to pull me away from the field and Alex Smiths right arm. Under these circumstances being the most talented or sitting up front of the class simply won't do it for a guy who's at best under performed and has been injury prone right at this time every season he's been in the league.

We have to understand that to JH Crabs is still an unproven commodity. And given how close this team came to the SB I doubt JH will hand the starting role to Crabs based on his talent. If Crabs isn't on the field in this camp like previous camps, for whatever reason, I'd be hard pressed to think that JH will start him game one. He risks losing the respect of the team after he worked so hard at getting this team to buy into what he was selling.
Undrstand this: Crabs isn't Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Justin Smith, Dashon Goldson, Joe Staley, or Mike Iupati. These guys have unquestionably proven their worth to this team. When I think of 49ers who could be out of camp and still be unquestioned starters I think of these guys (and a few others). Crabs hasn't really established himself as a rock solid, no question, injury proof starter who's shown through consistency that he's better for this team than the guy below him. Bottom line, this is not the season for Crabs to be sidelined for any reason. In order for Crabs to earn - yes earn - a starting role he not only will have to "be available", but Crabs is gonna have to do something he has yet to do - commit himself. He's gonna have to be the "1st one in, last one out", literally. He's gonna have to separate himself (to use JH's term) from the other WR's on the roster, and I cannot say he's done that. And this season, he won't be able to do that if he's not practicing.

Crabtree will continue to command a starting WR role on this team until he is unseated by Manningham / Ginn / Williams / Jenkins. At this point, the only receiver I've heard having a better offseason is Moss.
So until further notice (even with his injury), Crabtree remains a starter. Its just another Zone overreaction. Let's see how TC goes before we start suggesting ousting Crabtree. I know a lot of us have been critical of his lack of participation during pre-season, but he has continued to improve and still has more WR skills than anyone on this team minus Moss, who is one of the best ever.

You're right even if Crabs in a wheel chair he deserves to start !
