The Aldon Smith thread

With Aldon Smith in rehab and facing felony charges of possession of assault weapons, 49ers are not counting on him returning this year.

Sorry was already posted on the last page.

Why wouldn't he return? That's just stupid. Rehab is what, 30 days? The dude is an alcoholic not a heroin or meth addict. If anything, getting back to football might help him, not sitting around all day. I mean what do people expect? How many AA meetings can a guy go to in a day? IMHO, get the counseling and get back to life.

Also, the gun charges are way over blown. He's not a hardcore criminal. He's just young, dumb and full of cum: as my friends dad would say. He bought some high powered cool looking guns that are very much legal in many states. He wasn't running contra to your neighborhood Nortenos.

Too many self righteous posts.

BTW, selfishly, this and the slight slump of Kap's play (which I don't believe is indicative of his talent or future) could be great for the Niner's long term. I'd sign both of these guys to the longest contract possible on the cheap and watch the Niner's win multiple SB Championships over the next 10 years...

~ 1 year of Rehab.
~ 4 1/2 years of Prison.
~ 1 year of suspension by NFL at least when he comes back.

So we see this idiot in 6 1/2 years if ever? We should have picked JJ Watt. Maybe even a better player and 0% of the trouble.

I was just quoting Adam Schefter so don't take it out on me.

I gave my opinion up towards the last page and I said I'd guess week 11 at the earliest but 13-14 is more likely.

Sorry, man. I just used your post as a launching point. My focus was the article, not your opinion, which you are entitled to (whatever it is).

the reason he may not return is because some things are bigger than football. to many people unable to see the big picture or the forest through the trees. you do not know what he is. get your life together first, then your legal battles and then think about football

If he's like most pro athletes, his life is football. If you take that away from him, he'll probably lose a huge piece of his identity. What exactly does it mean to "get your life together," anyway? In my mind, getting your life together means to get back to your normal life with out the disruptions caused by addiction. I mean seriously, do you expect him to quit making millions and get a 9-5 construction job? It's not the life isn't bigger than football, its that for Aldon, football probably is life. I just don't see how sitting around doing nothing that resembles regular is a recipe for success. Have you ever heard the saying, "idol hands are the devil's workshop?"

where did i say he should quit football?? due to his substance abuse issues(which none of us know how serious it is but was serious enough to do an extensive rehab stint) and legal issues(which none of us know the full story), it may be in his and the teams (distractions) best interests to shelve him and start anew next year. If you do that i doubt aldon will shrivel into a little dried up corn husk. To me getting his life back on track means
1 complete rehab and if need be start and maintain a strict post rehab program, meetings , therapy what ever
2.get rid of the bad people and leeches in your life that may or may not have played a role in the situation he finds himself in
3 deal with what sounds like a very complicated legal process with the off the field stuff, DUI, guns etc
4 deal with the nfl after step 3.
he can do that and still work out at team headquarters and be a part of the team, you put that package i just outlined together and he will not have "idol hands". to many want to rush him back in the field so he can play the game,,, that is not even a blip on the radar screen to me right now
In hind sight do I wish we had chosen Watt?? SURE. Hindsight is always 20/20 so I'll take that with a grain of salt. At the end of the day Aldon was younger and obviously immature. I think we need to shut him down for the season, give him a chance to clean his life up and restart his career next season. On the bright side this will give us major leverage when/if we look to extend his contract.
Why do people keep saying they wish the Niners had picked Watt? The team needed a pass rushing specialist more than an internal lineman. Smith got more sacks in his first two years than any player in history. He had no problems in college. Anybody can be a complete draft wizard if they're prognosticating on a draft that happened a few years ago. Lame.
