Just watched, timing is a hoot, Jim Harbaugh's press conference where he stated that one of the things the team really needed to do was get James more involved and soon...too much talent to be ignored. Perhaps he was blowing smoke--trying to gin up interest in a trade...but maybe he was saying James needed to be involved and soon...too much talent to be ignored.
Its too late for a trade, and the point I was arguing is somewhat what you just said, the team is loaded at RB without a doubt, but its been proven by players activated and deactivated by Harbaugh that you have to earn your time on the field. Obviously there is something Hunter is doing right or something the LMJ is doing wrong thats keeping Hunter ahead of LMJ. I also find it ironic after the joke we call a #2 receiver does terrible returning ball that Harbaugh would mention getting James more involved possibly its a subtle hint to LMJ that someone needs to step up as a return man because what we have isn't working.

Thanks for directing me to the right thread! LOL...I do get lost at times! I really like Hunter and James and believe James will eventually be a very valuable player. But it's really difficult to break through experience on this team with JH as the coach. He values experience, as do I, so very few rookies have been starters. Reid is amazing this year and is a very wonderful exception. James wasn't nearly as NFL ready and perhaps is developing slower than JH expected...don't know.
I was being playful in the other thread, making the absurd comparison of the 9er record to the Philadelphia record, but my underlying point was we can't really know how good Kelly will be or how good James will be until a little further along in their careers. I agree that it is up to James to take a position or become relevant as a player. I see him as a better kickoff returner than a punt returner but that again may be experience versus eventual talent.
But Lattimore may make this a moot point if he comes in and blows Hunter and James off the field!

has LMJ ever shown he can catch the ball consistently?
Bingo.
About sums up the logic and intelligence that Ninertalk possesses.

I absolutely agree, and i get lost in what thread im in at times also. I think the issue could have possibly been NFL readiness and possibly fitment in this offense, We seem to run much more up the gut then we do around the line which is where I do think Hunter has the upper hand on LMJ. Personally on the last part about Lattimore I dont think Hunter or LMJ speed running positions will be the one in danger, if Lattimore can make the miraculous full recovery hell be shooting for Gores bell cow spot.

I think he was being sarcastic, as was I. But yes, I know a handful of people here saw a quick, small running back and immediately said SPROLES!

Count me as one of those who think he can be used the way Sproles and Bush were in NO. He is no way as good as them right now, but he does have some of the physical skill they do, speed, agility, quick, elusive, more so than anyone else on offense really. Can he catch? I don't know, he hasn't been asked to. Catching can be improved if you tell a player that's his role. we need help in the pass catch dept., its worth trying

Forget Sproles, I immediately wrote him in as Barry Sanders 2.0

On KNBR 680 FITZ&BROOKS yesterday BrOOKS said that LMJ struggled during TC returning punts. So were would he fit in during game days? he wont take snaps from Gore and Hunter is cemented as #2 also keep in mind that LMJ Failed to overtake Hunters #2 spot even though Hunter was coming back from injury.

No doubt, LaMichael could be one hell of a return man as long as he doesn't have issues with ball security, and it stands to reason the coaches have observed that in practice since they'd put such an inferior athlete in as KR instead of LMJ.
But maybe they can start him off on kick off returns, let him get some time under his belt then field punts.

I was Kyle Williams style (almost) nervous anytime he went to return when he was at Oregon.

Why did we draft this guy? No place for him on the roster, quick but not very strong, seems to go down easy upon contact. Maybe they thought he'd be another Darren Sproles, but the guy isn't nearly as tough to tackle.

This. He was a playmaker there for sure, but just did not look comfortable at all catching punts. He's much better suited as. KR and, IMO, would thrive in the roll like Gio Bernard's in CIN.
