That's my point that the stats are very close. (not comparing careers). Plus, the system in which Harbaugh is using Alex is the same. Just saying.

Exactly. It's worth discussion.
Who cares about those numbers? People look way too much into stats. Montana is the greatest qb of all time because he was cool in the pocket and thrived during the most important moments of the game. Alex is not either of those things.

Alex is way better than Joe.
This thread doesn't make the next 2 week go any faster til our next game. It actually makes it go slower.

OK, maybe you can compare the '81 team to this 2011 team. Or even Joe's production to Smith's on offense. But to compare Joe Montana the player to any one else, if you were lucky enough to have seen him played, you know Joe was the sh*t! He played like he had 5 pairs of eyes down field. Un-freak'n-cany

Everyone has compared our 2011 team to the 1981 team when it comes to our 13 win season, but lets look at Joe Montana's numbers compared to Alex's. Very similar when you look at the yards and touchdowns.

Montana 1981 - 3518 Yards, 19 TDs and a 88 QBR.
A. Smith 2011 - 3150 Yards, 17 TDs and 90.7 QBR.

Harbaugh is clearly tapping into some Walsh mojo.

Please, lets not do this.

I guess because the #'s are similar.

Wasn't Joe Montana drafted in1979?

Walsh didn't make him the full time starter until 1981. Worked him in slowly.
NFL was different in 1981...offenses had less advantages than they do now

He managed him better than NoWin and SingleBrainCell did with Alex.

I think Alex Smith is vary comparable to Joe Montana. Joe had his limitations in throwing ability but he had three things combined that were better than any other QB if you look at those three as a package: accuracy, athletic ability, and knowing the outcome of a play (studying) and delivering that outcome before it happened (executing).

Make that four things.

Alex is missing the execution part as he passes up potential plays and goes a safer or different route.

In my criticisms of Alex, I never said we need or should get another QB. It has always been when someone wants to make things up about his ability.

Joe Montana=Colin Kaepernick
I like Alex Smith but please dont compare him with Joe Montana.
You're comparing stats in the 80's to stats in 2011. Let me end this debate for you.

We finished 7th in passing in 1981.

We finished 29th in passing in 2011.

Do you understand the difference between the eras? It's like comparing someone's stats in the roid era compared to someone in the 70's. 35 home runs not a big deal in 1999. 1979 that's a d*mn good year.

Probably but it shouldn't be a problem. When Smith has four super bowl trophies to his name he can be compared with Montana as a player, but until then you can only discuss the stats and similarities/differences. Still fun!
