After being torched by Eli Manning and Tony Romo earlier in the year, the lack of depth in the secondary seems to be a cause for concern. Teams that have 3 good wr's seem to give us fits. Looking forward to the playoffs I'm concerned how we would do against the packers or saints if we don't generate pressure up front. Thoughts???

Packers run a lot of crossing routes (Pick Plays)
We need to pressure Rodgers with our front 3 or 4 and make him throw on his first read which should have decent coverage and not let him get into his 2nd or 3rd read which are usually deep and open.
No Secondary can cover if you give him time to throw

The 9ers DBs played pretty well yesterday. Receivers were covered but Manning was putting the ball on the button, making it impossible to defend.

This was the best QB we've faced so far. I agree we need to improve that area but part of the reasaon was their OLine were doiing a good job protecting Manning. In fact they played us better than anyone so far.
Agree Brown is a weak link. We also need another guy or 2 to platoon w/Justin and Ray Mac. When we meet higher calibre teams like the Giants our guys can get worn down if their passing attack keeps them on the field.

Culliver is holding his own as a rookie but is still learning, Brown on the other hand has been a bit of a liability - it's even looked at times like they're targeting him in coverage. I'm not sure what the deal is with Spencer, but I have to believe he'd be an improvement over what we're seeing coverage-wise.

Brown had great coverage on Manningham, it was just a perfectly delivered pass. They were icking on the little guy with him, I do think we need to draft secondary next year to replace the weaker members of that unit.

The secondary looked good. We mostly got beat by manning because of play calling. We needed to be playing more coverage and less blitz and getting a pass rush. Also I think Jacobs did a good job of pounding us a bit today and that also softened up the D. We looked good. We could have played better and fangio probably could have called it better. We were killing them most of the game though.

It seems like he gets these 2nd and 3rd reads at will. He's the quarterback that scares me the most because of his ability to scramble also. He's like a more mobile Eli minus the picks.

I think the Packers would light up this secondary like a Christmas tree.

Lets not kid ourselves. We're a good football team but there are weaknesses.... it's just that most of the time they get covered up by the outstanding play of others.
We need to draft a good Corner in the 1st 2 rounds, an additional Pass rushing OLB & a high motor DE. Then look at Safety, WR, another RB might be handy & a Guard or Tackle(looks like we're stuck with Staley for another year at LT).

They haven't played against a bully D yet and all teams play air ball with them. Keep the running game going and keep the ball out of Rodgers hands.

Agree and would like to see them draft DB and WR in early rounds. FAs might be better as they would be more NFL ready. The 9ers DBs are pretty young with Rogers and Williams being the only guys thirty or over. So, it's possible that there is enough talent but usually CBs talent is visible right away. Spencer is getting up there and I wonder why he hasn't played much since his recovery seems complete. Any idea?
Goldson, Whitner, Smith and Brown are all mid-20s; while Brock, Culliver, Holcome and Jones are all early 20s.
I would like to see Spencer and Smith play more but that is my prejudice of going with guys who have been here a while and wanting to see them perform under this new coaching.

I believe we have good depth with Spencer and Brock. But I believe that Fangio has kept Bowman and Willis in on all passing downs, so we have not been in a traditional nickle formations. If the 49ers do meet the Packers in the playoff then Fangio will have to decide to keep Bowman in or replace him with another db.
All in all I believe that the pass rush is what gives the Niners a chance against good passing team, especially if it comes from 4 man pressure.
