What does the team do with Alex Smith after this season?

No brainer. Sign Smith to 3 year extension. Kap needs at least one more year to be ready to start. Alex in year 2 might turn into something special in this system. If that's the case then Kap can sit and learn even more.

I fear the day we play Alex in another uniform..... and pray it never happens. I hope we sign him, not saying we should or shouldn't, just feel it could be a curse to let him go........

I think Alex will want to return to the 9ers, if only to be with Harbaugh. He obviously is enjoying this year more than any other year he's had, and who knows how he would do in another system? He has already shown loyalty to the team. K hasn't shown much so far - he may turn out to never be 1/2 as good as Alex. I hope Alex continues to improve. Even Afrikan will eventually forget how bad Alex used to be!

I don't know what Alex's wall is as far as throwing the balls concerned, but he is definitely smart enough to manage and run a peyton manning field general style hurry up offense. I think Jim Harbaugh coaching up that ability combined with his average but improving throwing ability makes him a pretty dangerous QB. I think if niner fans ever give up the masturbatory hopes of striking gold with another Montana-Rice, Young-Rice type team they should grateful to have him as their QB for another year.

Personally, if I were the 49ers I would be more interested seeing how Alex plays in the second half of the season than trying to save money. It is a huge risk giving a big check to a QB that hasn't been consistent, so the longer they prove their consistency, the better.
For the tea, it wont be about saving money, Over the next couple yrs we will be required to spend over 90% of our Cap. We have always given cap friendly contracts. The 2nd half of the season is where you earn your paycheck. He has to perform then so he either gets and offer from us or another team. Esecially since the 2nd half is considered weak. Smart business move by Alex and the team.

3 years, $30M. That's just a guesstimate, but probably will be in the $30M - $36M range.

There's no pressure on the organization to force Kap into the starting lineup at any point if Smith continues to play well. There are plenty of teams who would give up a 2nd rounder, or maybe even a 1st, for him in a trade.

On top of that if we let Smith walk i think you still need to bring in a vet to be insurance.
Its much more logical to bring smith back and let Kap take his place by deseating AS in a more natural and less forced way.

but at what cost? That is the main issue. I voted against bringing back Alex for this poll, MAINLY because it says "as our franchise QB"....um, not ready to give him that type of commitment again. Maybe I'll feel alittle different as the season goes on. But right now, not ready to invest $$$ and hand Alex the starting role for years to come based so far on his performance this year.
Alex is not coming back for a 1 year deal...not for a 2 year deal.....maybe for a 3 year one, but again at what cost?
I'm sure there might be a West Coast Team out there who has a strong running game and a strong defense that would love to use Alex the way we do....and maybe they would be desperate enough to over pay for him.....but I'd like it not to be us.
Again, this is just Alex leading up to his point....if Alex shows us more, and is more consistent....then yeah, It'd be hard to argue not bringing him back when good QB play in this league is rare. I personally feel we have the offensive weapons and Head Coach that we can bring in most good QBs to get the same type of production. If Jim feels that he would rather have Alex for the next few years, then for the first time....I can finally say I'd be ok with that. So far this season Harbaugh has impressed me so much as a head coach that I'd trust his judgement. Don't get me wrong, Jim can say all the nice things he wants to say about Alex as the season goes on.....but I'm going to wait till the end of the season to see how he really feels about the situation.
i agree with ya afrikan but smith's history with the team has shown money isnt on the top of his list as far as priorities go. i honestly beleive smith just wants to prove himself to the team/city that drafted him and made him suffer all those years of his career. That sunday night game where all the douchebags booed him probably sparked something in him idk, but i think the niners wont have to give him a blockbuster type deal to keep him.

I love these posters who say to give Smith one more year cause Kaep will be ready then. How does anyone know that? Also, that assumes Kaep would get playing time and start. Again that seems unlikely if Smith is here and playing at this level.
