It's the biggest surprise about this team. Teams often blitz to cover weaknesses (like the lack of a consistent pass rush from the front 4), In the process they expose a myriad of weak spots to saavy QBs.
The Niners don't have to blitz much at all...their front four are doing amazingly well. It's a total game changer for the defense. It vaults us from the middle of the pack defense that we were last year to one of the best in the league.
Defense always starts upfront. Losing Franklin and having McDonald take his place was huge, losing Lawson and gaining Aldon Smith was huge. Losing Spikes and gaining Bowman was huge. That's the key driver behind the defense's huge improvement (that and I think Fangio calls a good D)
