It means, getting a players head in the game by getting him some catches early and often. Crabtree had the same problem last year when they threw him the ball once in a blue. It's the same concept as "warming up."
The fumble was a product of him trying to hard because he probably doesn't think he'll get many more looks/chances. The long ball drop was just a bad play by Davis, but it happens.
