My understanding is that Power Rankings weigh heavily how a team is playing now.
So, for example, even though the Patriots have lost a few games, they played really well this past week so they will probably move up. The Niners, even though they have won more games, didn't look good against the Ravens so they will probably move down.
Since the Niners kept the game close until the fourth quarter, they were playing on the road against a good team, and they had a short week, they may not drop 3-4 slots like some are suggesting, but......nine sacks doesn't help their cause. I think that one stat will have an overall affect on their ranking this week.
No worries....they are a young team and will improve.
Cheers!

Both are valid concerns. The Niners may not be quite ready for prime time yet.
That being said, they have some time still to get ready.

What I find strange is that nobody even bothers to define what it is that the power rankings are suppose to illustrate???
Do they merely give out a grade of how the teams had done so far, basically a lightly tweaked version of the overall standings?
or
Are they suppose to forecast the future, and if so short term or long term?
The power rankings I see posted are clearly the former as opposed to the latter because they change too much too often to be relied on for speculation. They seem to be used as a Season in review for those who can't figure it out on there own based on the standings and the games you know, you actually watched.
They are so useless, but that is the NFL these days, they target the casual fan

Guys its simple. Here is how NFL, CBS, ESPN etc etc make their Power Rankings.
step 1: Order the teams by standings
step 2: rearrange teams grouped together with same record, rearrange based on geography, East is always better than West
step 3: Identify 3 teams who are underperforming based on Mainstream Experts picks at the beginning of the season. These are the teams who the networks devote most of their coverage to regardless of if they win or lose. These teams can vary year to year, but more often contain the same teams for many years in a row. The Dallas Cowboys must always be one of these teams.
step 4: Move up the 3 struggling mainstream favorite teams a few spots in the rankings
step 5: assign a unique ranking to each with no ties
step 6: write some sophmoric b******t next to each team
step 7: release it, believe it or not people are actually waiting for thisI am betting the Saints are going to win tonight.
Here is your new basic power ranking for week 13. Excuse me for any mistakes I made with my US Geography....they use spatial data to ensure no mistake is ever made here.
