Glad we're getting some love, but all this does is give other teams more ammo to play harder against us.

The Lions are among the stiffest competition in the NFC. If we can beat them in Detroit without one of our top WRs, I'd go as far as saying that we will be facing the Packers in the NFC championship game.

I hate power rankings. One sentence that describes a team has jinx or hate all over it.

Power Rankings are harmless fun.. They are also a good gauge of media perception of how the league stacks up. They make for some good water cooler conversations etc. Folks no reason to hate on harmless power rankings. Let the Niner fans enjoy being in the top ten, and by all indications there to stay for the first time in like what.. a decade.

Ah just read this in the ESPN header...
On the heels of a 48-3 pasting of Tampa Bay, the 49ers jumped seven spots to No. 9. Look for coach Jim Harbaugh's bunch to move even higher if they can tame the unbeaten Lions (No. 4) in Week 6.
Looks to me like they are reserving a top 5 slot if they pull it out this week... as they should.

Redskins and Bills ahead of us? I disagree.

Hasn't jinxed Green Bay or the other top teams. Good teams are jinx-proof... they just win games.

Even at 9 on ESPN that still is not really giving the niners any respect. Every single week on ESPN we have been the lowest ranked team with the same record and have always had a team with a worse record ahead of us. Same goes for this week, worst ranked team at 4-1 with the 3-2 Steelers ranked better. Don't expect the talking heads at ESPN and SI to eat crow anytime soon. These are the guys who had us last in the division before the season.

I'm happy with 9 but put the Steelers further down.

Also, somehow the Cowboys moved up 2 spots after a bye week.

I don't know if we've had a threat about our least favorite teams, but I'm interested in what you guys think. I don't care about the raiders. Never felt a hatred against them. They're in a different conference and they're just a different team all over. I agree, I hope they do well.

Detroit is undefeated and have put up huge numbers on offense all season long, with two amazing second half 20 point deficit comebacks this year.
The Niners are just coming on strong the last couple of weeks and struggled mightily the first 3 games into the first half of the Eagles game. Most power rankers have the Niners in the top 10, which is where they belong unless the continue to exert their will on quality opponents.
Also, Detroit has Stafford, whom people absolutely love and has the potential to move up to be a top QB this year... whereas the Niners still have Smith who people still doubt.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/11/week-five-power-rankings-2/
1. Packers (No. 1; 5-0): Brett Favre was surprised it took the Packers so long to come back from a 14-0 deficit.
2. Saints (No. 2; 4-1): Who does Roman Harper think he is, Ken Lucas?
3. Lions (No. 3; 5-0): Calvin Johnson had only one touchdown reception last night, which will cause him to drop out of Cris Carter's top five.
4. Bills (No. 10; 4-1): Leave it to a guy from Harvard to perfectly execute a dummy play.
5. Patriots (No. 5; 4-1): Leave it to a team from near Harvard to make the Jets look like a bunch of dummies.
6. Ravens (No. 4; 3-1): With John Harbaugh's brother's team at 4-1, Packers-Lions isn't the only must-see game on Thanksgiving.
7. 49ers (No. 12; 4-1): The worst division in football is producing one of the best teams in the conference.

NFL.com's power rankings: see the bold
Geez, what do you say? The suddenly effective Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter combined for 190 yards on the ground. The defense gave up three measly points. If you're a Niners fan, you just have to be encouraged by Alex Smith, who had three touchdown passes in 19 pass attempts. That's a score every 6.3 throws. Coming into 2011, Smith had one touchdown pass every 29.7 attempts. Oh, and that's the second week in a row that Jim Harbaugh's passing attack has been surprisingly effective against a secondary that was supposed to be superior.
