Should we trade Vernon Davis?

Teams with TE's as their primary receiver or go-to guy don't usually amount to much. Trading him for a late first would be reasonable because Delanie probably wouldn't give us more yards but he would give us more catches as he's much quick out of his cuts on the shorter "bail-out" routes. That is the key ingredient of the trade, we wouldn't be losing much due to the backup AND we can garner a solid enough pick to acquire something in other places. Of course, that isn't always the answer as it is kind of like taking points off the board, why give something up for possibly nothing.

All in all, Vernon's numbers will begin to go down once a receiver steps up on this team. THEN is when we will see if he can truly be a productive TE that helps his QB be comfortable with insurance routes.
Teams with no receivers and no tight end don't amount to much either.

Your 2nd point is wrong. As a team we'll get more opportunities and Vernon will get the same targets he's used too. Vernon's not getting more targets than the rest of the elite tight ends. He finished 3rd and 8th in targets the past 2 years. We're at the bottom in passing attempts, that's going to rise once we get better receiver play.

He had a great game. Still, unless we line him up at receiver twice a game and throw a few deep balls to him, he will still be a TE that runs TE routes majority of the time and that's not difficult to replace.

Look at how difficult it is to find a go-to WR compared to a TE. TE's are not difficult to replace in the league. ATL had Alge Crumpler who is comparable to Vernon and they didn't miss him when he left. We have always had average to above average TE's.

Most of the routes ran by TE's that get them open are by design and after that, their sheer size and catching ability allow them to make some more tight catches. Like krizay said, Vernon was open on most of those due to the play design. The deep ball is what he gives us that other TE's cannot give...but how often do you see that from a TE?

Alge Crumpler is no where close to being comparable to Vernon. Alge is fatter, shorter, slower and has never had a season as good as vernon has. I dont get what your problem is dude... is it pride?

The problem is not Vernon, its the niners giving him opportunities. yeah his first two seasons he struggled catching, but he's made the most of his opportunities since then.

He's actually blown more opportunities than made. The "opportunities" you mention are play design in which even Walker could get open on. The REAL opportunities he gets he has alligator armed or stops his movement only to get tackled for little RAC.

It's not about how talented he is. He's very talented. It's about how easy is he to replace and TE, my friend, is one of the easier positions to replace.

And you need to look at Crumpler's stats again, they ARE close.
WOWWWWWWWWWWWW
Trade for huff
vd is the only REAL leader on this team (taken his lumps and grown from it) so ya he can talk sheit now
he is the only player to make the most out of every opportunity this year
he cant put up gates type numbers until six others players get dumped, trashed, or reorganized, coaching.....whatever
idk how many no1 WR's or TE's put up big numbers without others mates who were making plays out there too (at last the type of plays the propel a player to elite)
signed a nice extension
something aint right with 6 players
...also, stab yourself with a butter knife.
keep vernon forever
Like i said before, sure, trade vernon...His TE position for WR. Think about it. With his speed he would be a nightmare matchup for a DB or CB. Yes he caught some nice balls, but he also could be doing the same on slants or outs, 1 steppers, and then let D try to catch him or worse , bring him down. And he also could be thrown to 15 times a game. That ultimately would put either Delainie or morgan in 1 on 1.
Yes, we most definitely need to trade arguably our most productive/consistent offensive player the last 2 years and counting.

He's too stiff, he jukes instead of trucks, he always does that jump catch which means he has no hands. He needs to slim down because he's too strong. His dreads were weird.

He also tied the record for TD catches by a TE two years ago and nearly had 1k yards; last year, with a worse offense he only averaged 16.3 YPC, tops among TEs and 12th in the league. He's also our team's hardest competitor and best motivator.

So yes, trade him please. Niner Talk really is the place where good ideas go to die.

See, if we can put him out and get him to run a perfect slant route, THEN he becomes a deadly threat because that route is dangerous as he will catch it on stride and already be moving upfield. Hell, with his speed, he could possibly catch that slant, turn it up, and split the safeties for some huge gains or TD's.

I hope they work on that route with him, it would nearly be unstoppable, especially on goal line...if the QB can get it there.

Then he could possibly rack up WR like stats, which ups his value.
bump! end this f**king thread right now

OP + Krizay.
Like I said, Joe C, trade him his slot for WR. Guy truly is one of our best OL blockers, but trade his slot for WR and i don't think once he catches that sucker, anybody is going to bring him down..necessitating single coverage of Morgan, delainie, frank, hunter , whoever, while they gang cover Vernon. Used to call him VD, but that just doesn't work any more. He IS Vernon.
