We went from a very poor FA period in the first few days to an average one. I don't think that's cause for gloating OR skewering the FO.

I am going to have to disagree with you. There seems to be a fair amount of this belief that all we did in free agency was maintain the status quo......Wrong

I believe that guys like Edwards, Rogers and Goodwin will provide us with a considerable upgrade at their respective positions. Losing Franklin is not a huge deal. Sopoaga will do just fine in his place. Aldon Smith holds enough promise that losing Lawson shouldn't be a factor either. I feel as though we did great considering that we did not have to overpay for a guy like Joseph or Asomgha and thus not be able to resign some of our own talent later on down the road when we are in a legitimate position to make a super bowl run.

Free agency this year was a success in my opinion and we definetly have reason to gloat. Go niners.

I disagree that Rogers or Goodwin represent considerable upgrades over Clements and Baas. I think that adding Edwards is significant, but so is losing Franklin and not replacing him. He's a very good NT, and the perception that he isn't that seemed to directly coincide with when he signed elsewhere. Had he re-signed, he'd still be considered a good player around here, IMO. Sopoaga at NT in a 3-4 is a downgrade, no question about it. We also lost Spikes and didn't replace him either.

We're not a more talented team. I'm just hoping that the coaching, especially on the offensive side of the ball, will be so superior to last year that we'll see significant improvement just based on that.

I agree with Goodthings19,

We definitely have gained a net worth in talent. These are my opinions:

Rogers is definitely an upgrade. Yes, I have heard he has bad hands. Ok. But it is not like Clements was tearing up the league in interception totals. Rogers will play press coverage more solid than Clements. Clements cost MILLIONS more than Rogers so big upgrade and value in terms of salary cap.

Manny Lawson was solid in the run and pass coverage. But frankly he was a huge fail during his tenure with the 49ers because he could not get to the QB. That was his job. If Aldon Smith can put up the pressure like reports are saying than no love lost with Lawson.

Aubrayo Franklin was good. Damn good. Sopoaga will be serviceable in this position and it will be interesting to see how he does. We all know he is strong enough.

Baas will not be missed. Frankly he was fighting for a position on the line before Heitmann was injured. He is NOT worth top 5 money. Goodwin is an ex pro bowler. He worked with Drew Brees. He is a huge value and will be a leader on the line.

Braylon Edwards? $1 million bucks. That is free basically and he steps in immediately as a true number 1.

Donte Whitner is already showing to be a vocal leader on the defense. He had 140 tackles last year for the lost boys of Buffalo. I wouldn't be surprised if he is our best pick up in FA. I wouldn't be surprised if he is one of the best pick ups for the entire league in FA...time will tell. Being on a better team will only allow him to shine more.

Goldson...we know what we are getting. He has lapses at time but he can hit and he can cause turnovers. Great value signing for a guy looking for 8 mil a year.

All in all Trent Baalke straight up pissed on all the haters. Many of the fans on this board were upset in the beginning and there is no problem with that. Some people are just more patient than others. Now it all comes down to how they play on the field and I thinks we will be making some noise.

NICE I'm happy with how trent has actually done. Franklin seems to have been really the only area we didn't upgrade on defense! We are loaded at saftey, Let the best man start! Maybe the actually do have a plan. Hopefully some of these guys work out, and we resign them next year. This way we can focus on drafting some Youth along the Dline!

NT should actually be pretty solid, we are not sure what we will get with Soap as a 1 gap NT, but having RJF and I. Williams as reserves help. The 9ers have no depth at DE in the base 3-4. Do they even have a back up on the roster? I am hoping that they sign a vet to a 1 yr contract to be a reserve.

Evans and RJF can both play end I believe.

Just wanted to say that no ownage, in the history of ownage, has ever been delivered as hard as the ownage that Baalke and the 49ers FO (especially with the resigning of Goldson) laid on MadDog. Just goes to show you that every wannabe armchair neckbeard is just that...a wannabe with no real inside knowledge.

You are out of your mind. Most of you saying ownage are talking crazy talk. Baalke is a GM of a team that runs a 34 defense that has no true NT. A defense that down graded at CB. Cmon Rogers really? Hes no upgrade, hes a CB from a 31st rank pass defense thats missed multiple chances at INTs and was burned 3x times as much as Clements last year in less games. We have 0 known quality depth at DE. All Baalke has done was not over pay FAs. Bringing in Edwards and Whitner is a good thing but nothing to say ownage over anyone. Plus the mass email was a real rookie move that lacked professionalism. Sure Maddog can be a overbearing jerk but the fker is more right than wrong. Wait until this seasons over before you start talking crow food lunchables.

You're absolutely right, we didn't drastically improve at all. If anything, we lost continuity on defense for the sake of saving some dollars.

you're looking for a quick fix and that's not what they are trying to do. it's a process that will take time. if we had overpaid for 2-3 free agents you would have b***hed and moaned how the front office still doesn't know what they're doing.

Haven't we heard all this before? The defense wasn't the problem, Nate could have reworked his contract and Spikes and Franklin would have came cheap. We weren't that far off on defense, hell, we were in the top 10 at one point of the season last year. A FA here and there would have improved that defense immensely.

The biggest problem in the FO is that they just couldn't let #11 go, now that's where we could have improved in a huge way. I mean really, aren't you a little concerned that #11 is tearing up the secondary during TC? Alex Smith, really? It's not like Harbaugh can change Alex in one week.
This is where your preconceptions are hurting your objectivity.

The main reason that Singletary was fired, and Mike Nolan before him, and Jim Hostler and Jimmy Raye, et al., was because they had no idea how to design an offense or how to use a QB in today's NFL where ALL the rules are slanted to give the passing game success. Under the Nolan/Sing regime they had no idea how pass patterns were to be run, or pass block, much less how to design and sequence plays. As a result, the offense stunk.

Now Harbaugh comes in with a modern day offense and the QB that a lot of people hated is now doing well. That should not have surprised very many people who really study offensive football. Yes, Harbaugh CAN change Alex in a week. All he has to do is give him something decent to work with, and that is what is being reported from TC.

My prediction for a long time has been that Smith would prove his critics wrong if ever he got a coach that could utilize the talent on the roster. Let's watch and see.

A couple of things that I'd like to chime in on:
obx49: I really think that there were more reasons to let those players go than just saving a buck. Clements' contract was a burden as it was, so it had to be changed. However, there are also those that feel his skill set has deteriorated as well(see Greg Cosell). I'd feel confident that the Niners offered him a contract at what they perceived his value to be, and he got a better offer from the Bengals. With Spikes, the biggest issue was age vs length of contract. TKO was one of the guys that I REALLY wanted to come back, but not on a three year contract(he'll be 37 at the end of that). Bowman was drafted to take that spot over eventually. I'd rather it have been 2012 than 2011, but he'd be wasting on the bench until the end of his contract if we give Spikes a 3 year deal, and 37 year old linebackers aren't usually the dominant players they once were.
Franklin is admittedly a bit of a mystery. The Saints got him on the cheap, so it does make me wonder why we didn't ante up a little more for him. The only reason that I'd make a guess at is that it has to do with Fangio's scheme. Franklin didn't really play well until Manusky took over for Davis, and had the line go from a 2 gap responsibility to a 1 gap(or maybe vice-versa, one of you XandO guys help me out). If Fangio is having the line do more 2 gap, then maybe they don't think Franklin's the guy. Only speculation on my part, and, truth be told, we'll have to wait until the season starts to see.

dj43: I don't know if Harbaugh can FIX Smith in a week, but I'd definitely say that he's better suited to help mask some of his shortcomings until he's had time to address any of his issues.

It's entirely possible that I have missed some of the notes from TC, but the ones that I have seen seem to indicate that Smith is having mixed results so far. I believe Harbaugh himself said that the team was about "mid-May mode" or so. Anyway, there are quite a few new faces on both sides of the ball, which I'm sure is going to cause some miscommunications as far as coverages or wrong routes. I'm not going to put too much stock in any big play stuff from the first week of practice, offensive or defensive. Let's see how they play this weekend.

I agree. All too often this forum turns into a big game of "told ya so", and I think maybe MD and others would have been well served to take your advice by waiting until deeper into free agency before declaring Baalke's M.O. a complete failure.

It is heartnening to see the Niners make these last minute moves. Adding Goodwin, Whitner and Edwards helps our team's chances a lot more in 2011 than the roster we had a couple days ago. Some notes to go with BrianGo's listing of free agent players signed by the team, in addition to Corcoran, who was also signed:

Braylon Edwards- A nice potential addition to the WR's. 53 receptions in 2010 was not impressive, but 17.1 yards/catch and 7 TD's is nice. Living in Ohio, and watching a ton of Browns' games over the years, I have to say "Buyer Beware". The kid is an underachiever, and has hands of stone. Ted Ginn hands of stone. But, certainly worth the risk for the money, especially with Crabtree down for awhile. Edwards, who is never going to win the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, still has to clear a potential legal hurdle, as mentioned from Fox News in the story below today:

NFL free agent Braylon Edwards could face legal trouble Thursday for his role in a fight that broke out at a bar in Birmingham, Mich., early Monday, the Detroit Free Press reported.

A statement from South Bar, in downtown Birmingham, implicated Edwards in the incident that saw two of his cousins charged with felonious assault after allegedly attacking two bouncers with a pocket knife and a fork.

"Braylon Edwards was present and involved, but it's an ongoing police investigation, so at this time, we don't have any further information," the bar confirmed Tuesday.

The Free Press also reported that "privately, employees at South Bar said Edwards was spurring on his cousins rather than trying to get them to stop fighting."

Edwards' cousins, brothers Tre Lenard Wright, 19, and Edmund Jerrell Wright, 22, both pleaded not guilty Monday.

Donte Whitner- Another big name acquisition who has underachieved, like Edwards, but presents good value in this contract, especially when analyzing the Niners' secondary. Like Edwards, the team really did not have much interest in retaining him, and like Edwards, did not have big interest to be picked up around the league.

He's still young, and can be a guy who holds the fort for two years, but Buffalo fans were not heartbroken over his departure, which should temper some Niners' fans enthusiasm. A good, but not great player.

Johnathan Goodwin- As mentioned last night on the Goodwin thread, he's going to be 33 during this season, and the Saints left him to walk. He was the 7th, 8th, 9th center (if someone can verify that would be great) to sign in free agency. Might hold up two years, and the best part is that it frees Snyder to replace Rachal. Got a lot of help in NO with their two monster All-Pro guards.

Carlos Rogers- As in common with the previously mentioned threesome, not much interest around the league. Definitely a second or third tier CB at this point, and nowhere near the level of Asomugha, Joseph, Taylor, or even Carr...but miles better than T. Brown. So, another good one year signing.

Antwan Applewhite- He is a roster filler, a guy who is a team's fourth OLB. Not worthy of being excited.

Larry Grant- A big hustle guy who will compete for a backup ILB role. Good special teamer.

I get the idea that many want a collective crow eating to take place on the board. I'm not sure why this is so important to them. Some are calling for people to aplogize. Now, that is bizarre. Maybe they believe Trent Baalke is a genius, and the master plan fell into place. Maybe they just want to dismiss any criticism against ownership. I guess Trent and Jed have many relatives on the board.

Well, I can guarantee that this was not the master plan. This was not even the backup to the master plan or the backup to the backup to the master plan. It was a complete failure up front, with a mad scramble to pick up big-named players who are in the back side of their career, or have massively underachieved. A celebration for big-named guys that virtually nobody wanted in free agency is not a reason for an "aha" moment, or a demand for crow-eating.

Will the acquisitions help the team? I think so. Edwards brings a big play ability, but will also crush your heart. However, fans have to ask themselves: why was there so little interest around the league for him? The same goes for Whitner and Rogers. All of them are better than the current man on the roster,so this makes me happy. But is any a "difference maker", someone who will take a team to the next level? No.

That is my opinion.

Now, on to Taylor Mays. And... suddenly, without warning, the "aha" crowd goes defeaningly silent.

Cheers.

I don’t know why everyone gets so worked up about your posts you when you are clearly joking. I love this shtick you have perfected. You know, the one where you come off as this insufferable douche bag, who thinks he is smarter than everyone else, who refuses to ever acknowledge when he is wrong, who creates these “big boards” and player analysis based solely on the regurgitated material from true professionals, who is so desperate for attention that he intentionally creates flawed, exaggerated, inflammatory arguments just to pit himself against everyone else, who is clearly the Will Hunting of college and pro football who toils away in OH grading papers when in reality he is the greatest football mind since Bill Walsh just waiting for his big break. You should be lauded for creating this persona; it really brings some levity to the zone. I mean can you imagine if someone like that really existed?? Cheers

WOW!!

Funny to read through this and see how many people are right back on the hater-aid around here.

In a matter of 2 weeks. Ill break it down

2 Weeks ago-We love Harbaugh he is great, we have a good chance at being good
3 days later- We haven't signed a FA we are doomed! OMG lets freak out and say how bad we hate this team and Baalke
3 days later- Oh well I'm here to eat crow because I overreact about every little thing. Patience doesn't exist
1 week later- "How pathetic are We?" "Were doomed after 11 practices" OMG the sky is falling Andre Luck, Andrew Luck, Andrew Luck.
My guys of 1 week from today- Dang we are looking pretty good! I guess these guys just needed time togehter, more than a week of practice we are back in the play-off hunt.
