Are we seeing a horribly managed free agency? Or something bigger?

Now that Rogers is signed maybe the naysayers will recognize that Har/Ballke may know a little bit about football and know how to get some FAs. We have three weeks to fill in the WR, Center, and possibly another CB before the season starts while developing our backups that are already here - Mays, Bowman, RJF, Tukuafu, R. Smith, Adams, R. Johnson, Perkins. If they get a winning season out of our team then we will say taht they know what they were doing.

I'm not buying anything until we sign Goodwin.
If we don't sign him, we're tanking the season.

We want to save money. When FA started they said they weren't going to be major players. So they told people where they stand. But it wasn't like we were great and couldn't improve a lot. We were in fact bad.
Ignore him. He never has anything positive to say about the 49ers.

If ownership and senior management show me something positive I will say something positive...

No, they don't what they are doing. Sorry, signing a second or third tiered CB to a one-year contract is not going to resolve the many issues that could have, and should have been fixed a long time ago.
Separate yourself from being a Niners' fan for one second. Pretend your team is the Broncos. You would not have the same optimism. In fact, you would mock what the Niners are doing. It is simply not competitive.

rather have a guy for cheap that may want to play than give a guy 50m to play like a b***h

LOL, I knew this was coming. They sign one third rated FA and the fans go crazy. One more FA signing and you declare him man of the year.

Who did you want to sign? Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks are playing well in camp, by all accounts, so it may be that they are better fits for the new scheme. The Same must be true for ICE over Franklin, since they had a chance to sign Franklin on the cheap and they passed. Baas got stupid money, and he only started one year. They replaced from w/in last year at C, and that worked out well. I would like Olin Kruetz, but I don't want Godwin just because he was a Saint. He was surrounded by the best pair of guards in the NFL, so it's easy to look good. The safety market was weak to begin with, and Goldson hasn't gone anywhere. The CBs were getting big money AND their choice of playoff teams to join. Nnamdi chose big money and a playoff team. No surprise there. Joseph chose a ten win team. I prefer Rogers over Cromartie, since Cromartie is all talent and no desire (still has awful technique, won't tackle, can't shut his mouth). Rogers can't catch, but he covers and tackles. I thought he would get big money from someone, so I am pleased that we got him cheap. Floyd was the only FA WR that I wanted, and he is still available, last I heard. Edwards runs hot and cold, and has terrible hands. Sidney Rice had microfracture surgery on his hip, so he may never be the same, and he only had 1 good year. I like that they have a plan, and I like that they stick to it, in spite of chicken little responses from impatient, reactionary fans. Four years ago, GB fans were similarly upset about their FO's approach to fixing the D, now they buy into the plan.

Interesting post! Gives some context to some of the FAs (Rice--didn't know about the surgery, etc). Rogers can compete with the young guys and I hope he is a high character guy. This young team does not need prima donnas! There does seem to be a tendency by Baalke/Harbaugh to bring in good guys. Hope it continues until they have enough experience on the team to deal effectively with a high risk/high reward guy.

Speaking as a fan of both teams and living in denver (Niners #1 of course), you're full of sh*t.
Most Bronco's fans would be dying to have our situation.

I don't want to make this about you-know-who...but I'd much rather have Kyle Orton...

True, but Orton is the Mcnabb of the Broncos meaning hes been productive but no one wants him on the team. Everyone is shouting for Tebow obviously even though right now he is getting shown up by Brady Quinn in TC.
I'm just trying to bring to light that while our situation my not be the best or making fans wet, it's not as bad as some self proclaimed experts think it is. In the case of denver, most broncos fans would give their left nut to have our roster instead of theirs even after the FA exodus.
The Broncos are a perfect example of why filling in roster spots with free agents doesnt work. They turn over their D-line on an annual basis with supposed free agent upgrades yet they cant stop anyone. The only defensive FA that worked out for them in recent years is Dawkins. Aside from him, DJ Williams (de la salle boy!), Dummerville and Bailey, they have looked to free agency time and time again to plug holes and still have one of the worst defenses in the league year over year.
