The Seahawks have gone out and signed a solid starting guard in Robert Gallery, and number one receiver in Sidney Rice, and re-signed their best defensive player Mebane. They lost Hasselback, picked up Jackson, and will probably be the team most likely to be a landing spot for Carson Palmer either in 2011 or 2012.
AND
the Cardinals have picked up their franchise QB, Kevin Kolb, and locked up Richard Marshall to replace Rogers-Cromartie, and picked up Daryn Colledge from GB. They signed Stewart Bradley from Philadelphia, got Jeff King from Carolina, Nick Eason from Pittsburgh, and Chasi Stuckey. They also re-signed center, Lyle Sendlien, and just signed Pork Chop Womack for depth.
AND
the Rams have signed a new starting SS in Quintin Mikell, signed nasty guard Harvey Dahl, picked up Justin Bannan from the Broncos, Mike Sims-Walker from the Jaguars, Zac Diles from Houston, and just retained starting guard Jacob Bell after his release in a restructuring.
While some of these players are not GREAT, it appears each team is making a serious attempt to upgrade their roster. I just hear the Niners "talking" with teams, but unable to seal the deal with the players they are "talking" to.
While there still is time to get this thing together, the fan base has every reason to be skeptical, frustrated, angry with management.
And have they not gone out and made big acquisitions each offseason and hasn't the NFC West been regarded as the worst in the league? Every year we here fans saying our division is getting better in free agency and we're doing nothing and every year this division tanks.
So this means we should go out there with a worse team than we had last year? What's your point?
His point is great coaches can get more out of average pplayers and make the team better in the long run than a couple supserstars that might not fit into the system.

If the plan is to tank for the #1 pick (Luck) I'm all for it.
I don't think they want to tank, but if they do.. they will take the morale of the team down with it, and good luck signing FA's if it looks liek we are actually worse than we were last year.
how many times have we heard we will be patient. it's not like you hit homerun in the draft to stay quite. whatever. like i wrote in another thread the hiring of J. Harbaugh was a PR ploy because the SF Bay Area media along with the fans were breathing heavily down the dorks necks therefore the move being made, it was like the dorks did that just to SHUT us up.....

thank you rational poster
We don't know how are new coaches will be and how the players will respond but we can't deny that fact that the past coaches sucked!
I personally believe a majority portion if not a land slide portion of this board would have to agree that the 80's Niners win 0 Superbowls with Singletary or Nolan as our coach. Same players, new coaches, and team fails, trophy case remains empty, and we probably barely ever reach the playoffs.
I truly believe coaching is the most important aspect to a team, followed by chemistry and then talent. Who remembers the 2002 Patriots, that team was a bunch of no namers that came in and held the greatest show on turf to 17 points.

It almost seems as though they are going with the youth movement this year. We have so many "unproven" rookies and second/third year players that may turn into superstars, and they are trying them all out...
-Spikes left, opening the door for Bowman to step up. Had Spikes stayed, we would still be wondering about Bowman next year.
-Franklin is leaving...? Not sure how much they are trying to retain him, but their mind seems made up on the Smith, Soap, RayMac combo with rookies and RJF backups
-Clements cut, which will open door for Culliver, Brown, and Adams (is he still around?). Same as Spikes, if he stayed, we would still be wondering about Culliver and Adams
-Goldson I believe they are trying to keep, knowing the safety position is in trouble with Mays, Smith, and rookie?
-Alex Smith stayed to mentor CK. This is one position where they will likely stay the course with the veteran.
-RB should be the same with adding Hunter. Obviously they didn't anticipate the Gore holdout, but this position really didn't need an upgrade.
-TE needs no upgrades, we are set
-We lost Baas and I am guessing they wanted to keep him too, but not for the price the Giants paid. We brought in rookies to compete for spots, but will likely have the same roster as last season: Staley, Iupati, _____, Rachal, Davis. We will try Snyder at C, and hope that works out. It worked pretty well for us last season, right? We know Snyder sucks at RT, but can backup both G positions and has experience at C. Sound familiar to 2010?
-WR I was hoping they would upgrade, which still may happen.
Overall, it seems as though we are trying out all the youngsters and will target free agents next year with positions of need. Harbaugh and Baalke want to build "their" roster, which may require a year of trimming the fat

While Balkee has been with the Niners for a while he is a new GM, historically when a team brings in a new GM and coach generally the team gets blown up. Fangio is going on about not watching a lot of tape on the defense I call BS the coaches have spent extra time especially with not having a CBA watching tape and know exactly who they believe can make up the core of this team.
We will see players who were not getting it done under Sings coaching begin to perform while others who may have done well under that type of coaching fail. Harbaugh also has to evaluate football intelligence. Fangio and Harbaughs systems are far more complex (anything is more complex on offense after Raye) and on offense very precise than their predecessors and they have to see how fast each player figures it out.
This is a year of evaluating who will fit on Harbaugh team. I think we will see a much improved offense which really isn’t saying much considering how bad we were. Defensively, statistically when it is all said and done we will be about the same if not worse as last year. Hey there is always 2012.

That means playing with scrubs and losing all year. They had four months of nothing to evaluate people....there's lots and lots of film...why do we need to suffer for them?

Yeah... My wife wanted to take me in the bedroom to have sex at the third best opening day, but I made her wait because I had to see that overtime win again. And she even mentioned how we "just don't look like" that team anymore
. (she knows I've been really stung by these last few days).
f**k man, I bet we all put so much effort into this team, but all we have so far in looking forward to this season is our coaching

Should have hired an experienced player personnel person to help Baalke.

Yeah, we said we were going to do that. Must have gotten pushed to the bottom of the priority list

Horrible management IMO. It's one of, if not the main reason, why a lot of people were skeptical of Baalke being given the GM spot to begin with. No real experience to judge him by and by the way the Singletary and Nolan coaching stints failed, I would have thought that a new approach towards giving inexperienced noobs jobs of importance was a thing of the past.I guess it wasn't.
I give him some slack because of the occurrence of the lockout and the restrictions it brought with it, but why are we still kicking tires on guys? Research and video sessions on available players at positions of need should have been all that the GM and his staff should have been busy with. WTF were they doing?
I know that they couldn't talk to players or agents, I get that, but its a really bad look that every team in the division apparently had a clear cut plan and path they were going to go down and were just waiting for the FA period to start while we are still...waiting, with money to spend too.
Now we are left to wonder if a more experienced GM may have had the experience to understand how to manage the player movement in such a frenzied short period of time due to the lockout better than Baalke.
Missing out on Nnamdi is one thing, but to only excite the fans with the daily "the 49ers are looking at..." news alerts are lame and not a good start off point for Baalke. I hope that we aren't relegated as the team that FA's use to help leverage a better deal elsewhere. But seeing that it may has already happened in the past and probably again with Burress, it might even be too late to hope for that anymore.

What? Tanking? Blaspheme!!!
I'm not saying we are "tanking" the season...all I am saying is our front office isn't doing jack $hit to upgrade our roster...nothing...call it whatever you want but the result is we will likely not be very good this year and a big part of that will not be filling out our roster.

everyone is acting like we're on the cusp of a Superbowl or something.
