Give up? No. Recognize reality? Yes.
I do believe that Harbaugh is the answer at coach, and he will have a very young team play at a high level and we will see some exciting football.
But I don't think you'll see this team win a lot of games this season. I don't think they'll win a lot of games next season either. But, my hope is that we will see steady, marked improvement.
Rome wasn't built in a day and it took a number of gaffes and some terrible head coaching moves to put us in the place where we are now.
I truly believe that Harbaugh is a step in the right direction, finally, but he will not turn things around overnight. Anyone who does believe this has blinders on. There's not much talent here to work with. We have needs everywhere.
Well, JH does have more talent to work with than 2005 and when Bill Walsh came on board in the late 70's, also with a weak division I think can do a decent 9-7. Then make strides in 2012.
Where is this talent you speak of? We have NO QUARTERBACK. If you think that the QB that started last season 0-5 is suddenly going to rebound and do great things for us -- well -- sorry -- that's a view I do not share.
We have a young offensive line, no QB, our best RB is holding out. We have a TE who still has hands of stone and a decent crew of receivers.
We have no pass rush on defense and the leakiest secondary in the NFL.
I don't see this talent you speak of.
Therefore, this is why I believe that this year and next will be rather rough.
Im going to hold back on my judgement until we get into the season, but it is frustrating to watch the other West teams make moves while we just toss our players out the door with nobody to replace them. I think most people were ok with getting rid of Clements because of his contract, but I would assume most people only wanted that if we had someone to replace him with. As of right now, we have more holes than we expected.

Yeah the sad part is it's been the same story for the last 4/5 years now with no improvement in sight. I

I really am starting to think this team is looking to rebuild with Harbaush's players rather than Mike Nolan or Singletary's.

I should change the title to "Screw me, we are rebuilding."

Might as well unload all the garbage.
We definitely have a lot of trash on the 49ers that was hoarded by the Singnolian era.

Before the lockout I thought free agency took too long. After two days I still think it's too long.

pipe dream.
We'll be drafting in the top 5 next year. Unless something changes via free agency, we aren't coming close to 8-8.

We have the coaching.
We were favorites to go to the playoffs and most had us in the Super Bowl last year.
We're almost there. Keep the faith.
Win the division yes, but are you sure that you didn't just wake from a Rip Van Winkle long nap, because SUPER BOWL...
. I never heard one person suggest this.

I am feeling we are alot more like Tampa Bay the last two years than the Lions of the early 2000's. We have a young competetive coach with a clear plan. We are young in a lot of places and are going to make mistakes, but we are getting more physically gifted which should pay dividends in future season. I hate to see so many starters go at one time, but I dont doubt that all the guys we lost really needed to go eventually. Clements isnt worth his contract, nor was Franklin going to be, Lawson is a great talent in the wrong system, Baas is not worth top 5 bank at his postion much less top ten, Spikes has maybe 1 good year left in him and looks better than he is playing next to P52. Ideally would I like to see all these starters go one or two at a time over the next few years ...of course, but that doesnt change the fact that they are guys who needed to go.
As to the the things we couldnt control, like A. Smith, Gore, Goldson and Crabtree, it does ad some adversity to the early going this year, it will no doubt increase our growing pains... but lets be honest does it really hurt the long term prospects of a team building for the future if two habitual underperformers and a RB entering his last few years as i viable feature back miss the preseason. Does it crush our long term hopes if a mediocre talent with great character tutors our QB of the future for a year. No way... its just more playing time and more coaching time to press the coal...the good ones turn to diamonds and the bad ones crush under the pressure.

It looks like that decision has been made, at least on defense. By cutting Clements and letting Lawson, Franklin & TKO walk, they're clearly re-shaping the D which will have a ripple effect on the entire season. Then when you look at bringing Alex back as a bridge to CK, I think the 2011 season will essentially be a five month training camp in preparation for 2012.
