An article on Pro Football Talk claims there are 7 teams that are over the salary cap.
Raiders ($17.3 million), Steelers ($11.5 million), Texans ($8.5 million), Vikings ($5.6 million), Lions ($5 million), Cowboys ($3.7 million), and Panthers ($939,000).
...there still could be some good picks out there.
Good post.
On thursday contracts become official, some decent players will get cut.
WE HAVE A PLAN!
But honestly... what if, and its a big IF... but what IF Baalke & Co. planned on teams overspending in this unsure CBA climate and then having to make panic cuts when contracts become official thursday.
Obviously its speculation and we have already filled some holes with Rogers, Goodwin, potentially Edwards... but it would be nice to see us pounce on some players cut due to getting under the salary cap. IMO it would give niner fans some confidence that we may actually have one of the better FO's in the league now.
Please remember the words IF and "speculation" were the basis of that last sentance, in no way was it a statement of fact so save the negative responses for a different post.
Are you saying longtime NFL professionals might know more than the collective wisdom of the webzone? Audacious!
Wierd right?
Indubitably!
Astounding!

If they sign either Edwards or Floyd, it'll be a great day. Floyd is arguably the more dependable of the two, but BE can make big plays. Plus, he wants to show the Jets he's still got it. Rogers and Goodwin are both upgrades, as well. I hope this action quells most of the Baalke bashing...
Floyd is more dependable, Edwards is more dangerous as a weapon.
Who do you thinks fits better in the WCO?
Hard to say. I don't think either receiver stands out in WCO terms - both have made their success off of the deep route. Both are big receivers, with Floyd being the bigger one. Braylon Edwards is the much better deep route runner. That's the bad thing about big receivers - they're not always the most polished route runners and don't have that sort of sudden quickness that you'll see in a lot of ideal WCO receivers.
I would rather take Braylon just because he's younger. Floyd is a big target but he was in an offense that made him look good. Plus, Braylon had an insane pro bowl year - his ceiling is much higher than Floyd's.
That's a great point. I forgot the Rivers factor. Not sure Floyd is Floyd with Sanchez in the AFC East.
Yeah. Keep in mind Braylon had better stats last year with a lesser QB. In 2007, Braylon also had 16 touchdowns and 1289 yards with Derek Anderson at the helm. Floyd has yet to even touch graze those numbers even with Rivers.
Those stats are pretty compelling. Ok, give me Edwards......apparently I'm easily convinced. Good thing I'm not a GM.
Like I said, Floyd is more consistent than Braylon, but Braylon is far more dangerous when he's "on."
I'd take Edwards.

I watched a lot of both last year because both were on my fantasy football team.
Floyd disappeared at times. When Braylon had the ball thrown to him, he produced.
Give me Braylon over Floyd anyday

ian williams, alex smith as our only hints of signees is not smart. we have been a mediocre team and need better players. im not saying sign nnamdi, dahl, charles johnson, lron mcclain, and (insert good qb here) but we need to make a move or two.
obviously developing from within has not been a strong suit
well within we have a few great pieces in gore willis vernon and some really good pieces in iupati not to mention some solid players in staley baas goldson crabtree (will be at least solid)...
we do need a better rg and cb and qb......but for now ill be happy with a cb
a good portion of them are also first rounders....they are not necessarily developed from within...they would have been good anywhere they went

BUT, I can't believe we're not retaining some of the talent with at least one year f**king deals like Lawson and Franklin and Clements have received. We have plenty of cap room, and one year deals would do perfectly well to hold us over until next year's draft and free agent signing period if we want to make a splash then.
Pretty stunning to see Franklin and Lawson and Clements sign one year deals elsewhere, although part of me is thinking that if they couldn't get a long term deal in SF and get the money they wanted, they'd much rather showcase their talents on a 1 year deal on a team that actually performs well and gets media coverage.
It's easy.........they don't want Franklin, Lawson and Clements and I wouldn't either. They do not fit the new defensive scheme.
What exactly is the new defensive scheme? Fangio himself says they're trying to figure out guys' strengths and weaknesses to best fit the scheme to the roster. Those 3 players all have strengths and weaknesses to be sure, and how they fit into the scheme could most definitely be optimized by the DC
While I think Harbaugh likes to adjust to the offense's strength, I think Fangio wants pressure. Clements is not a one on one cover corner and Lawson cannot pressure. I am not sure why they do not want Franklin, but, he want's a long term contract and they do not want to give it to him plus, they want to put McDonald at DE and Sopoago at NT.
Are you guys starting to get it now?

I have complete confidence in this team. I can't wait to watch them grow and learn and get better every game this season. Go 49ers!

I'll have to admit that I basically agreed with Kaplan's piece
http://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/929-just-like-that-Baalke-fails/
I was concerned about the failure to address the corner position and to let David baas go. That being said, not like Baas was a pro bowler and I like the idea of bringing in a Superbowl winner on the line and a guy in Carlos Rogers who has played very well if not pro-bowl caliber football for the skins. These two signings bode well and are probably upgrades at both positions. If we get Floyd great, if not it isn't huge. I'm not very concerned about most of our losses. Lawson was a good player but expendable and probably had played as well as he might have and I think I smell Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks holding down the outside from here on out which is probably good. I think once again Baalke has shown he can remain cool under pressure and make deals that need to be made. We certainly don't seem hapless right now in our ability to sign players or fill holes.

Because you all went berserker mode when we didn't sign personnel in the first few days!!! He didn't even fail to begin with.
I went ahead and waited to post a response to that article until today. I hope I see it because it states exactly what is wrong with articles like that.
Premature ....anyway. Premature for sure.
Baalke NEVER failed to begin with. He's only getting better.
