Lawson, i know we drafted Aldon Smith, but he can replace Parys, cuz that guy is garbage. I wouldnt want to pay Franklin what he'd fetch in the open market.

Paying Franklin would be way too high, and unfortunately, paying Lawson is going to be a little too high as well.
Manny Lawson is no secret. If a 4-3 team wants him, they will be able to offer him a huge contract to be an every-down OLB. Paying him the same money to be a part-time 3-4 OLB is not economical.
With the salary cap, you must get the most bang for the buck. We can't commit huge dollar's to an OLB who can't get to the quarterback consistently.
Manny Lawson is a great player, and he will be fantastic within a 4-3 team willing to pay him a giant contract.
The only upside of Lawson leaving is that I've always wonder how he would play on a 4-3 team. I think he has probowl potential, but that may be a strecth.

I agree with both you guys. I said almost the same thing BrainGo said. Probowl might be a stretch Oakland-Niner, but I think he's a lot better than Niner fans give him credit for.

I'd like to keep Franklin he's going to get offers but hopefully he remains a 49er.

Lawson. he does so many things well. abrayo is good but RJF didnt do such a bad job filling in for him last year and hes gonna want a lot so he'll probably be gone. goldson? we can afford to be without him, save for two or three games he hasnt really been a great safety.

I think Franklin is as good as gone. And it doesn't seem like the Niners want to go into a bidding war for him. I guess they're ok with Soap moving to NT.
I voted for Goldson because I can't even think of who would take his place. Reggie Smith? Taylor Mays? Colin Jones?
At the same time I don't really like Goldson, I think he's the type of player that is just worried about getting paid and not about getting better, that's just the impression I got from his tweets last season. I don't know s**t though.
I think Lawson will do better in a 4-3 defense. On the bright side, if we lose Lawson and Franklin we will probably get a 3rd round comp pick next year

Franklin, who does the thankless job of clogging up the middle.
We can afford to let Lawson go. Throw Laboy on the outside, mix in Brooks, and slowly let Aldon take over.
Put in Reggie Smith in place of Goldson, which is admittedly a band-aid, but it works for at least a year.
You do realize that Franklin would require us to break the bank right?
And so would Lawson. He will want a Bart Scott deal, and quite frankly he hasn't earned it.
Yeah plus if we get him locked up long term that only hurts us because you ideally want 2 pass rushers in the 3-4 D at your OLB spots. He's not a great pass rusher. He'd be good on a 4-3 team but he's not a fit here IMO.

Not sure I agree entirely with OP's assumption that MacDonald is coming back. He has said that he wants to start, and that he is excited to be a free agent. Seems to me, if we re-sign Franklin, we lose McD. He's been healthy for 2 yrs since the knee surgery, and dude can penetrate, which is what the d-linemen did in Fangio's Stanford D. Out of the three listed though, I'd keep Goldson, if the asking price was reasonable. The defensive backfield can't afford to get less talented right now.

I don't think its a stretch at all. He has the speed to go sideline to sideline against the run and pass, the athleticism to cover TEs and RBs out of the backfield, and the length to cut off throwing lanes. In a 4-3 scheme, he could be a star.

Optimism? I like it. Very class is half full of you. Depending on their contracts, and who we bring in, they could get us even more than one third.

Great points. Every time I watch RayMac I think, "why is this guy on the bench." I've seen him at training camp and he is bigger than Soap. Most of his teammates at Miami thought he was the best D player until he got hurt. Dump Franklin, start RayMac, Soap and Smith. Next year, with the first round pick target a legit NT.

Never thought about that, at least when we lose these guys we have something to maybe look forward to.

The real thing to look forward to is I think if Lawson and Frankly leave that's like 13 million dollars or something tied up in those 2 guys that we now get to spend. Time to bring in a CB like Jonathon Joseph.
