Alex Smith will improve this year under harbaugh, he was pretty good last year save for a few bonehead plays but that coulda just been raye sleeping and mumbling out the wrong play call. Matt Hasselbeck is a guy i hope we go after to back up Smith. he is a well respected, seasoned veteran and after the beasting hes been taking the last few years i think he would be content in a mentor role this year. he helps alex and colin with his knowledge of the WCO and he is very professional and goes about his job the right way. great role model who can also be a great backup if he needs to play next year due to injury. thats how i see it anyway. no josh johnson, get a guy whos been around for a while and is familiar with the WCO. smiths "mentor" was rattay and i believe ken dorsey was still here with us as well. f**k that. lets do this the right way this time. hopefully harbaugh gives us a Brees/Rivers deal and we can trade off one of these guys and make a killing if they can both be developed just like SD did.
This, with paragraphs!
Plus a UDFA for the practice squad.

I think our starter will be either one of Alex Smith or Carson Palmer. Kolb will have too high of an asking price and being young himself makes no sense for CK development, you want someone to hold the fort for 2 years tops.

Some fans may not like it, but Alex Smith's return to 49ers a good move: he has Harbaugh's playbook and can run workouts w/ teammates ....

...while lockout continues. Kaepernick can't do that and Carr is expendable if they pick up another veteran QB in free agency

Of course, it's still up to Alex Smith if he resign with the team. It's a move of faith on Harbaugh's part
Some fans? Mbach,if your listening some where. Try 75 percent of fans.

Kaepernick is the real deal...Alex better study hard and find his heart like the tin man or he won't beat Kaepernick.

A Smith, Hassellback and Kaepernick would give the 9ers a good solid look at QB. I would like to see a veteran FA who is not so injury prone but that might not be in the cards.
Next year will be interesting to watch and it may be a screwed up year as the team transitions to a new system, but my bet is that Harbaugh's team will be much more organized and practice more efficiently than Singletary's. The nutcracker will be replaced with skill and accuracy drills.
One of the things I like most about Harbaugh is his insistence on having fun--making training camp fun with lots of competitions going on. He even challenged Kaepernick to a throwing contest when he visited.

Alex Smith will be our man come opening day. I'm on the fence if we should let Kaep see any time this season. The last thing we need to do is throw him to the wolves like we did with Alex. Sure we're alot better than we were then, I'm just not a fan of making the same mistakes twice.
Kaep is from a mid major just like Alex, played in a unconvential offense nothing like the pros just like Alex, and with the lockout who knows when he gets into camp. Let the man learn. It's not Alex was learning from a chump either. His rookie mentor was McCarthy whose got a Super Bowl ring on his finger right now.

They could still make a play for Johnson once the lockout is lifted. They are going to need a long term solution for a back up. Smith and Johnson could compete to start this year with Kaep competing the following years.

i meant another one harbaugh basically annoited alex the starter and i dont think he would waste a draft pick trading for a yound qb when we already picked one 2nd in the draft i see us picking uup and older veteran qb in FA

I really hope we don't fall into the Alex Smih trap. We are in a division where we can win it now and we need to go after an established vet QB.

I love Harbaugh's comment that no one is "anointed". He won't be like Nolan and anoint Kaepernick as the starter. Nor should he. He probably, if possible will get a Kolb or Hasslebeck..... but, now is not forced to "mortgage our future" in doing so. Alex and the newly drafted QB plus a FA creates a very competitive situation. I think that is what he wants. Kaepernick just wants a chance to compete. He will get it.
The comment also is a "shot over the bow" for all starters. Starting last year is no assurance you will do so this year.

I say try signing Pat Devlin when the lockout's lifted. Have him compete in camp, and sign him to the practise squad. But looks like Smith, Kaepernick, Carr

I won't mind Tolzien, either.
