A lot of draft "experts" had him rated solidly in the 2nd round! GREAT VALUE.

If Gore cries every time the 49ers try to put some competition on the team, he needs to man-up or get off the team. He's going into the last year of his contract, has been injured the previous 4 seasons and is not getting any younger, he would be an idiot if he didn't expect the 49ers to get some insurance, especially since Harbaugh runs a run-focused version of the West Coast Offense.

STRENGTHS

Hunter has a compact muscular build and good speed. Reads his blockers, shows good patience and hits the hole hard. Quick back that has enough wiggle to make the first guy miss. Very capable receiver that runs precise routes and possesses reliable hands. Productive college player with a nose for the end zone.

WEAKNESSES

Lacks the speed to consistently get the corner at the next level. Not a powerful runner that struggles to push the pile in short yardage situations. Does not always lower his shoulder and gets brought down by arm tackles too often. Lacks the technique and strength to be effective in pass protection.

This guy didn't fumble the ball even once in 4 seasons and 700+ attempts. Very impressive.

Rathman can easily fix this.
Saved our entire draft in my opinion. Contributor right away and insurance as Gore's contract is ended soon. Not that he's a replacement, but he can play right away if need be.
looks like we finally may have Gores replacement (not that he needs to be replaced now)

I can image about Barry Sanders is compared to Kendall hunter??
This was probably the first arguable BPA pick we made. He was definitely one of the top 5 players available.
A great scat back who brings speed and change of direction. If he can catch, he'll be a great addition. I like this pick.

roy!

I do not see Hunter taking over Gore's spot right now. Running back is always a position you need depth at. 49ers were projected to take a back in the middle rounds anyways.
We BADLY needed a RB who can run off tackle, bounce it outside and keep defenses honest. With Gore/Dixon it's all down hill so this is a very good need/value pick.

We have done a fantastic job of addressing the key needs this year and getting guys who ranked high at their positions and have the intangibles to develop quickly with great coaching. And most importantly, they FIT our systems (ala what Pittsburgh and the Patriots do better than anyone)

OLB - 2nd best 3-4 (and prototypical) OLB in the draft and has the potential to be special (this pick also helps the secondary two-fold)
QB - Harbaugh got his man; nuff said
CB/ST - Physical CB (again, speaks to the new defensive philosophy), can play S and adds even more on ST as a returner or in coverage
RB - change-of-pace back and can learn behind one of the best down hill, between the Tackle's runner and learn how to blitz p/u and catch balls out of the backfield

Now we need a prototypical NT, DE, OL. Anything else?

Sign Alex Smith, Baas, LaBoy and make a play in FA...
