From Maiocco's breakdown of all offensive players through 3 practices:
Quote:
Kendall Hunter: Frank Gore's absence for the first three practices has enabled him to get more practice reps. His elusive running style was apparent Sunday during padded practices, as he left defenders flailing with his ability to start-and-stop and cut backside on run plays. He has also gotten work handling kickoff returns.

I love hearing this.
Heard good things about PJ Fleck in practice also.

Kendall Hunter’s Training Camp Blog link
Kendall Hunter, the 49ers fourth-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State spoke with 49ers.com prior to the first padded practice of his NFL career. Find out what the rookie running back is going through in his first 2011 Training Camp blog update.
It’s crazy to be putting the pads on the first time in the NFL. I’m living a dream. You’re kind of nervous, but it’s a dream. I look forward to the padded practices. As a running back, you have to look forward to contact. It’s part of the job.
Everybody has been trying to learn the playbook at the same time, so it’s been a good time with the veterans so far in camp. Everybody’s trying to help each other. We’re all in here together trying to get ready for the season. I’d say all of the veterans have helped me out so far. It’s a team-thing. If you mess up, somebody is there to correct you.
I don’t know everyone’s names just yet. It’s kind of hard to know all of them. I know the majority of everyone here though. I know some of the guys who played high school ball in the state of Texas like me, but most of them left college before I got there.
I like getting to know our coaches. Our running backs coach, Coach Rathman has been fun to work with. He makes sure we’re on top of our stuff and he makes sure we know what we’re doing at all times. Coach Harbaugh brings a lot of energy to the team too. You can tell he’s a player’s coach the way he interacts with the guys.
Training camp has been cool so far. It’s a business. It’s totally different from college and everybody is good, so you have to bring your A-game every practice, all the time. I hope to get better and really learn this playbook.
I try to run like all the good backs. That’s the first thing I noticed when I was a young kid. My brother made me watch all the great running backs. That was the first thing I noticed, somebody running with the ball. I was like, “That looks like fun.” I played quarterback in middle school when I played Pop Warner, but I’ve been a running back for most of my career.
It’s hard to keep in touch with my family back home. We get back to the hotel late and it’s about 12 at night Central time down in Texas. When I’m away from football, I like to spend time with my girl and my two kids. They’re young, but they’re proud of their dad. It’s tough being away from them, but I like it on the West Coast. It’s different; it ain’t hot like it’s in Texas. The weather out here is pretty good.

I would love that, but I don't think that Hunter is equivalent to MJD. Look at MJD's trunk. That guy has the thickness in his legs and butt to actually push a pile and fall forward.
All of this to say, I still am excited for Kendall. I like him as a change of pace back and a back that can get lost behind the tall linemen in front of him and then squeeze through a crack for huge yards.
I hope he develops a passion for pass blocking. Maybe sitting behind Gore will help him out.

Durability and being an undersized passing target are concerns. In the WCO, ideally, running backs are more helpful to the quarterback when they have a larger catch radius and have the ability to regularly absorb hits from large linebackers, a la Roger Craig or Ricky Watters. Although, a Brian Westbrook type smaller back can also be functional. Hopefully, he can channel Westbrook into becoming productive.

Seemed like his most memorable plays were laterals or tosses and then trying to squeak around the edge. If he can get some good hands I can see him as more of a reggie bush/sproles type of complimentary change of pace back to gore. But who knows I guess he could turn into a MJD but that's like hoping dixon turns into hillis just because they're both tall and big. For every mjd or hillis there's 5-10 trash rbs lol.
Dixon seems unimpressive so far, wouldn't be surprised to see him finally get some yards before the preseason ends but the last 2 weeks of the season he averaged only a little over 2 yards per carry...Really ridiculous how bad he is.
