It is principal, egos, etc, etc, etc. If the 49ers pay Jim this the next guy on another team will use Jim as leverage and there might be some backlash within the league. I know it sounds stupid, but it is what it is.
The next coach who takes his team to three conference finals in his first 3 years? I wouldn't worry about that. Chip Kelly is making 6.5. Carroll made 7 last season. Andy Reid is making 7.5. Going into last year none of those guys had a ring.
If Andy Reid can justify 7.5 Harbaugh can ask for 8.
Great points.
Yup. Fisher and Carroll are both making $2 million per season more than Harbaugh and neither had won the Super Bowl when they signed those deals. Harbaugh has a good case for $7.5 - 8 million per as is. And it should be structured it like a players deal. Build in BIG escalators if you win a Lombardi and de-escalators if you miss the playoffs.

It's pretty clear that the 49ers want to move on with or without Harbaugh, and I agree with them.
He was hired, coached them up, and set them up for the foreseeable future...with or without him. Harbaugh is no fool- he wanted the Browns for three reasons:
- gets to play against brother John
- is that much closer to Canton, where he will be enshrined one day
- the Niners would get draft picks from the browns, which would then be used by ex-Stanford coach Roman to draft mostly Stanford players and keep them at home (Harbaugh would want this- he cares about his former players AND their families).
Besides, he probably heard about California breaking up into 6 states and wanted no part in that disaster. I say he's a smart man, I'd bounce to Cleveland too. The uni's are pretty classic too.

Aren't they paying him 7.5+ a year. And Fisher has coached for years and never won anything. So they could be using that as leverage.
Coaches don't count against the cap. Why do we care about how much he's asking?
Good point, it seems as if Eddie,Always saw this also. He spent extra money on good coaches and staff. Some might even say he was
More than just a bit lavish in the way he spent money on the Niners

He can kiss Canton bye bye if he goes to Cleveland.

One of the best coaches? Since when?
He took over a mediocre team who was loaded with a lot of potential and us to win more often, no questions here. But it is the third year in a row with another conference final and still no rings here.
Stop talking in extremes. These HCs are simply bad, period.

my reaction too, especially the first 2 points. like peyton and eli being on opposite conferences is important to the harbaughs, this was talked about quite often after we hired him and around the t-giving day. as far as the hall of fame thing and being closer to canton, nevermind, its so dumb its not even worth addressing.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Every person in here hated Nolan, Dickson , and singletary... We had 10 straight losing seasons and the one person that was able to LEAD us beyyond that you want to fire. Who cares how he does it? He gets results and that's what good coaches do. This pop culture where you have to be soft spoken , always smiling, respectful, and diplomatic is total BS. Stop reading reports , if you are offended by the way he coaches then turn off the freaking television or go root for the dreaming Seahawks. We are winning. Baalke, and York are going to drive us straight to a 6-10 record when harbaugh leaves because they want it their way or the highway. Stupid.
