Wait dude... In this time of uncertainty with the CBA, Harbaugh can only work with what has until we find out otherwise. Given the limited options at the moment, keeping Alex Smith may be the best choice we have?
Best choice we have? I just threw up in my mouth a little!

Ok, can we all agree? This is Alex's 4th and final shot. If he can't do it this year than we really, really , really, know........ that Jim Harbaugh is a horrible coach....

Most insightful interview with Harbaugh to date...I thought Tim did a good job. The more I read/hear from Harbaugh, the more I like what he's bringing to our team. It still seems a little strange to be hearing all this good stuff from our head coach...it's been sooo long, not since Mariucci. What a treat it is to know he's going to actually walk the walk...in Harbaugh I trust.

I like Harbaugh because he's a little bit nutty. He doesn't act like a preacher (Singletary) or a general (Nolan). He has an air of creativity about him, and a genuine confidence, which is refreshing.
I LOVE the way he talks about the missing 49er tapes like missing "intellectual property". He treats it serious, and doesn't just laugh it off. This his HIS team and some d******ds STOLE his team's "intellectual property" (a legal term; as in, "I'll sue your ass if you don't give them back"), and he wants them back. It's just so beautiful.

I have to agree. If a new CBA isn't reached until late July/early August, that puts us at a very big disadvantage and keeping Alex may become a necessary evil for us to be able to salvage any part of next season.

I think Harbaugh like a good challenge as a head coach and a QB teacher.
And teaching Alex Smith to be a good QB would be the greatest test of all. If he succeeds, he will be considered one of the best head coaches of all time. If he gets another QB, and that QB succeeds, most of the credit will go to the QB, and some will think Harbaugh got lucky in landing that player.
I think Harbaugh is too tempted not to try to turn Alex Smith into something he has never been.

harbaugh is smart, work with alex, fix some of his issues (the ones that can be fixed) then trade alex and some draft picks and get andrew luck next year.

It's a huge risk to go in this direction (with Alex) for Harbaugh.
- IF Alex succeeds under Harbaugh...then it becomes a great comeback story and BOTH Smith and Harbaugh land huge pay days once contract time comes around again.
-IF Alex fails...he's effectively DONE in the NFL as a starter or at the very least...does significant damage to his career by pretty much cementing himself as a back up for a few more years. If Smith walks...he's young enough (26) to go to a legit team with legit coaches and a legit, established offense where he can do reasonably well and not deal with booing and pressure, etc.
-IF Alex walks and Harbaugh goes with an unknown and STILL fails...fans will be forgiving because, "1st year coach, rookie QB, 'starting over w/new offense,' etc etc." He'll have a built in excuse.
-IF Alex fails...Harbaugh basically is on a short leash with fans and it will basically be viewed as his 1st and worst decision as a coach.
In other words, Harbaugh better be EXTREMELY sure and confident that Alex WILL (not just "can") succeed in SF in 2011. Otherwise...it's just way too risky for him as a new coach, stupid on Alex's part, and fvcked up to put Smith through bullsht in SF for another year...just let the man walk and let us fans get some fresh faces and a new start.
Should be an interesting off-season.

Not really, if Alex plays like s**t then he gets a chance at his boy Luck, or Matt Barkley, Ryan Lindley, Pryor, Landry Jones, etc. Next year's QB crop is WAAAAY better than this year's. Everyone will blame this year on Smith and give Harbaugh a pass with a new QB who is supposed to be a franchise guy.

Harbough will turn Smith into a Sith Lord. Looking forward to it.
