I just think Harbaugh see's what the "Alexsexuals" "Alex Lovers" "Alexcuses users" see. A guy who can run a football team if given the proper coaching and proper system. I don't think he's coming in with the shutters closed as many around here are. From a guy that was hinting that Alex wouldn't be back at the beginning to a guy that suddenly has nothing but praise for the guy now, you'd think he realizes that Alex hasn't been the only reason for this teams demise. If that were the truth, in which many of you are so confidant he is, why would Harbaugh be saying these things? Because he's our best option? Think about that for a second...
Me I really don't care either way anymore. I've always felt our fanbase was far too hard on Alex and used him as a scapegoat for thier frustrations. But at the same time I understand. His inconsistencies are second to none. The thing I think Harbaugh may be able to do is turn his flashes of playing pretty darn well, into more of a constant. I believe that we expect Alex to come in and be consistent, but when the rest of the team and coaches around him aren't consistent, hows that supposed to work? In order to be consistent you have to have a base of consistency, in which we've never had. Alex missing passes, recievers dropping passes, running wrong routes, Oline issues, RB's fumbling the ball, or sidelined with injury, Special teams and our field position, defense playing well one game, then awful the next. See all these things come into play and have been just as scrambled as the next. This goes back to consistency, consistency, consistency. Once we can find a constant in all aspect of our game, I think the team as a whole will be better from head to toe.

i think as a qb he seems that he was put into a situation that was hard for him to do well or even decent in and when sees himon tape he sees something that makes him believe he can make alex a good or great qb

I don't understand you guys. You say that we shouldn't look at Kolb's stats because he has not had enough time to get in a groove. Okay, if we are not supposed to look at his stats, then what the HELL are you looking at that causes you to think he is worth a 2nd round draft pick?
Watching him in game and seeing his good accuracy, pocket presence, touch, etc. And add in the fact he's been coached by one of the best.
Same goes for Alex with this dude. You can look at his 82 QB rating or his "great" redzone numbers, or you could watch him in game and see him throw inaccurate passes, stare down WRs before he throws to them, check down too early, not hit his targets in stride, not read the field, make poor decisions, turn the ball over, display poor pocket presence, refuse to take chances, show a lack of anticipation and generally just make mistakes.
Numbers can be part of the argument. But putting Alex's below average numbers aside, he just doesnt pass the eye test.
i agree alex does not pass the eue test
the inaccurate passes he des need to work on and hitting his wr in stride
but checking down to early poor decisions ( i dont think he turns the ball over too much) and poor pocket presense is due to unfamiluraity with the system and lack of confidense in o line
he doesnt trust the o line and understandably so he takes a lot of hits one that shattered his shoulder before he is able to step up in pocket and take more chances he has to trust his o line again
i think mechanics are the biggest problem with him when it comes to accuracy we finally have a teacher since norv that can help him with that
When people talk about mechanics, there is only so much you can do, unless you are going to sit for another three years. We as humans revert to our natural instinct, Alex isn't going to undo some bad habits in one off season.
His mind is not there, he may be smart, but I am refering to football mind, like Joe Montana in SB against the Bengals, everything slowed down for him to the point he noticed freak'n John Candy in the stands on the most important drive.
Baalke said this of Smith without refering to him directly, when a QB takes to long he adds pressure on the o-line. So the o-line is not that bad, and Alex does take a long time. Don't know why Alex lovers don't see it. He is one of those college QB's that they say when they become pros are waiting for a WR to get open but the QB coach says what are you waiting for he is not going to get any more open than that.
In fact Vic F said the game has changed in that the QB now anticipates his throws and know where to throw it rather than wait for the WR to get open. Alex does not do that on a consistent basis. If he hasn't learned that part of the game by now from McCarthy Turner and Martz, he is not going to learn it at all.

Great point! I honestly feel a little better now. Let him re-sign with us and let him "compete" with a rookie and another couple of QBs. He will finally realize that he will never be a good starting QB in this league after the Guru puts him on the bench.

Please name the qbs he lost the competition to instead of being replaced when injured. I don't consider Sing's going with Troy after Alex was hurt as losing competition...I think Sing honestly believed that Troy was the hot hand and as soon as it was proven that wasn't the case Alex was back in.
Alex did lose it afterwards to Troy for one game..and got it back. I think he might have lost it to Rattay his rookie year, but I'm not sure.

For the record I would be ok with this... I can keep my AS jersey for another year - I would hate to see good money wasted.
Just a funny observance... what WR are you going to trust to throw open on this team? Crabtree is the best and how many INT's went off his hands this year? VD... is THE only guy that I think you can consistently trust to make a play when he is covered. I get your point, and know what your saying, I just think that he's tried that and when it doesn't work - "he makes bad decisions" or "he is inaccurate". Again not saying that some of that isn't true, but I go back to the pass to Moran Norris in the first game against Seattle - Smith got hammered... how could he miss that? well... if Norris continues running his route he makes an easy over the shoulder catch for the TD, but instead he turns completely around the pass goes over his head and is incomplete.
Its a chicken and egg thing... I don't know the answer.
With the CBA issues I would take Smith over Kolb or Orton if we have to give up a second or better.... just not sure that they are THAT much better. Plus Smith will have a lot more time to learn the O and he is already familiar with the WR's etc...

If he doesn't measure up (again) he won't see the field. This is the only thing that makes Alex Smith's possible return palatable.
