you can argue that he was better than the other two compared with the players he had to play with. Add him to the list.

Nolan was much worse.
I don't think that Singletary was that bad of a coach; we just didn't have a competent enough group on offense to cover up his lack of knowledge in this area.
If we had a better quarterback, Sing would not have been fired.

I pick Singletary because at least Nolan was able to attract top-tier FAs and draft decently. It's interesting that they both stumbled due to the same shortcomings (QB and OC) and that neither had a backup plan. However, Nolan probably has a better shot at being a HC than Singletary and that's probably got to count for something.

You act as if Nolan attracted top tier FA's. Most were poor.
You can say Sing was able to retain some of the 9ers top players. Willis and VD signed long term contracts. Spikes stayed.
Look at the guys Sing drafted:
Crabtree
Iupati
Davis
Mays
Dixon
Williams
Ricky-Jean Francois
Nate Davis where he was picked was a steal
I'm just going on draft grades as we would need 2-3 years to see how these guys panned out.
Pretty good for just 2 drafts.
Nolan made some good picks too:
Baas
Gore
Snyder
V Davis (although Nolan got nothing out of him until Sing came)
D Walker
Willis
Josh Morgan
But he had some bad and costly ones too
Staley
Balmer
Rachal
Alex Smith
HM: Lawson has been a bit of a disappointment as well
Sing was a better coach in the sense that the players respected him. Nolan got 0 respect from the players. Nolan deff a better X and O's guy but you need more than that to be a coach. Plus the way he handled the Alex situation was poor.
So Nolan was worse...Erickson was far worse.

Nolan seemed to be a better X's and O's coach. Singletary seemed to be a better motivator (though that seemed to wear off over time).
I would've rather had Nolan though. Even the best coaches like Gruden and Shanahan have lost control of their team.
In all honesty, I think Nolan can succeed in the NFL as a head coach. He needs an offensive coordinator that he can give 100% autonomy to, and concentrate mainly on the defense. I think the Steelers have been a good example of that over the years. They've had defensive-minded head coaches who have let their offensive coordinators run the show.
His failures in San Francisco were that he never got a consistent OC, mismanaged Alex Smith, and had too much power for a rookie head coach.

Singletary is more clueless than Nolan. He did less with more talent which takes some doing. Nolan was in true rebuild mode. We were actually supposed to win under Singletary but couldn't.

It's like different flavors of bad, either bad with the blueberry flavoring and bad with a lime flavoring, lol, it's just bad, lol, maybe they can one day be better coaches, I wish them the best, it just didn't work out here.

This, and with Nolan I don't believe we ended up with 9 players and 12 players on special team plays in the same game. We also weren't out of first half time outs 5 minutes into the first quarter.

Singletary had a way better roster, a way better QB, was in the weakest division in sports history, and he didn't do ANYTHING. Sing by a landslide.

Singletary was simply terrible, both ignorant and arrogant. The real question is whether he was the worst coach in NFL history, not just for the Niners.

Nolan gets a partial pass from me. By the time York finally decided to hire Nolan, it was so late in the cycle that all the quality position coaches were committed to other teams. The result was very poor development of young players and a team that was not winning. Add in the well-documented problems with ownership and it became a picture where good coaches had better opportunities elsewhere. Even though Nolan made some moves to get rid of bad coaches, the improvements were not of any great magnitude. That background made it very difficult to show good results. Then add in his own lack of offensive expertise and lack of understanding the personal relationship side of the HC job, and the result was predictable.
Singletary did a very poor job but his hire I blame entirely on the inexperience of Jed York. He should have realized the man had a very limited resume and should not have been retained after the first year.
On balance, they were both bad but for different reasons, however, Singletary gets the nod for having accomplished less due to his lack of offensive understanding and failure to maintain his composure under pressure.

Thats the exact reason i voted for Sing.. at least he gave Alex a change by keeping the same OC for more than a year.. to bad it was Jimmy Raye...
A rookie QB outta Utah runnin a non pro-style offense was doomed from the start.. I blame NoWIN... Don't get me wrong Sing sucks ass too but i think Sing is the smarter retard...
I think Nowin is the smarter retard. At least he can produce a formidable defense. Singletard is a career LB coach at best.

Singletary, because he inherited a far better roster, but got nothing out of it. He was a horrible tactician, basically a caveman masquerading as a head coach.
Both were horrible in press conferences. Nolan spoke in riddles and code, Sing talked tough and always had to watch the film.
