This.
Tomsula has two years worth of Coordinator experience, which came in the NFL Europe.
The same people that wanted to fire Singletary for his lack of scheme experience want to hire Tomsula, despite his inexperience.
I didn't say hire him as a head coach. Sing was neither a coordinator or a head coach at ANY LEVEL. High school, college, or pro. Tomsula has vastly more experience that Sing did, being both a coordinator and head coach. It doesn't even make sense to compare the two.

Why does everyone love Wade Phillips' defense? It was extremely vanilla when he was HC of the cowboys.
I looked at his defenses stats over the years when he was a DC and he wasn't even in the top 15 in PPG one year.

Ya, lets bring in a 65 year old fat guy from Texas that gets jobs based on his name, not what he's done. I'm sure he's been good as a coordinator in the past, but those days are long gone.

I wouldn't be upset if he stayed, i get the feeling we will be cleaning house fully, so he probably be gone. But if he is kept on I can live with it. Maybe if we tried investing a big free agent or a high draft pick to the defense it will help. Guys like Ahmad Brooks, Haralson, Clements, Spencer are not gonna cut it. We need a major talent upgrade in the defense.

Gone, no question!
We never addressed the true NT position, pressure from d-line (save for Smith), rarely use the ILB blitz from both guys, stuck with "run defenders" at the OLB positions, bend and broke all the time, had plenty of pass rushers on the team over the years but only used in predictable sets, can't scheme pressure, almost always blew it when it mattered most, rarely seemed to game-plan to our strengths or to clearly attack another teams weaknesses, consistent dumb plays by veterans, never progressed (actually regressed this year big time), brought in top-$ talent and devoted many top picks to the defense, no real player development, the "defensive FB" was a joke, on and on and on.
For those who are still blaming the offense, get a clue. This is about Manusky and he failed expectations miserably esp. this year!

Franklin was widely touted as one of the best NT in the game last year. The whole defense sucked compared to last year, but I think it was more about the safeties sucking than the front 7.

Comparing our defensive statistics from 2010 and 2009 we regressed in many key areas. With one game left against ARI (which in fairness produces a lot of our teams defensive stats) we have done the following year over year...
2010 followed by 2009 numbers
Sacks - 30.00/44.00
Ints - 13/18
FF - 12/23
FF Recovered - 7/15
First Downs against - 38.1%/36.7%
I expected our defense to maintain or get better as majority of the starting lineup was the same from last year.
T.O.P. The niners D has been on the field about 1:00 more a game year over year which gives them more time to create turnovers.

Franklin is ONLT a one-gap NT...you could get just about any DL to play a one gap. We needed a real NT who can play two-gap AND collapse the pocket (so Qb's can't step up all day on us like this year) and make it impossible to run up the middle on us.
The real issue is Manusky's focus on stopping the run (ranked 7th) and not placing a premium on pass rush from the 4 LB positions hence, exposing the crap out of the secondary.
Manusky is about as vanilla as it comes...way more than Nolan even when he was here. Manusky is the equivalent of Jimmy Raye.
Everything starts with your philosophy/scheme, then about finding players who fit it, develop them or obtain them and grow and progress into a dominant machine.
Manusky failed big time!

That was for one year that happened to be his contract year. The front 7 is missing a great pass rusher that creates pressure and that teams need to prepare for. Now the safeties are god awful. Smith, Goldson, and Mays all can't cover and all let wr's run and get behind them constantly. It's a toss up.

Manusky = FAIL.
Bring in Mora Jr. and a very aggressive 4-3.
