Only way we should even consider bringing Smith back is if he wins 3/4. Even at that, he'd should be brought back as a back up with the opportunity to compete.
I mean to be completely honest I could careless. Regardless of what we do with either Alex or Troy...we MUST draft a QB or sign a legit starter or trade for one. We can't put all our eggs in the Alex/Troy basket. That's something we can all agree on.
Frankly I'd lose some respect for Alex if he came back. Just be a man, go somewhere else and get a fresh start. Alex coming back to the Niners would be like your buddy (we all have one) who constantly goes back to the girlfriend who fvcks him over.

How would you use A.Smith in 2011?

Alex Smith has no reason to sign with the 49ers for them to just trade him. They would basically have to offer him the starting position (if they offer him anything less I bet he would leave), which if their plan was to trade him would be a lie. You could then expect Alex Smith to publically trash the organization, making it harder for the 49ers to sign other free agents.
Bottom line: The 49ers do not have a contract with Alex Smith next year, therefore they will get nothing when he leaves. Alex Smith doesn't owe the 49ers anything either. He took a major pay cut with the 49ers 2 years ago and did everything he could to make the organization succeed. Whether due to his flaws or the 49ers, it just hasn't worked out.

Want to know my nightmare scenario? The Cardinals sign Alex Smith and something clicks for him. We then get to watch him beat us twice a year.

Honestly, If he performs decently at the end of the season I don't mind offering him a contract with the underestanding that he is always going to be in compitition for the job.

So nobody wanted him last year and he got a minimal contract to stay but NOW he's in demand?

Nice try. Taking 9 words out of a sentence to for a laugh. Now lets look at the entire statement.
"I would like to see the 49ers tag him or resign him to a league minimal and then give him the Shaun Hill Special. Trade him to another team for draft picks."
Let me put it another way, I DID NOT mean tag with the intent to KEEP. I meant tag with the intent to not let him walk away free and clear. If we tag him, we can use that as a bargaining chip and shop him for picks. That is ALL I care about, getting something useful from a CLEARLY wasted Number 1 pick 6 years ago. . .
Nobody is trading for a tagged Alex Smith...do you know how much money he makes if he signs the tag ?
Sign and trade ? This is not the NBA son nor is it Madden.
Wow.
KRS-1 you are correct, a Franchised Tagged player makes an average of the highest 5-10 top players at that position. So A.Smith would be slated to make about 16 million if that was to accrue. Which I doubt would, but no one believe that McNabb would be traded within the division for a low 2nd rounder either. So stranger things have happen, but you are correct in your assumption that a team must be hurting (i.e. the Cardinals) to trade for A.Smith at 16m.
Which would bring me back to options two, why is it so hard to believe that a team would resign a player just to trade him? It happens more than not. Its a business and players are treated that way. Even the greats. . .
Oh and P.S I dont play Madden and havn't in 10 years. . .
No matter how desperate a team is they would not trade for Alex Smith if he was due to make 15 million. NEVER. EVER. EVER. EVER.
And please list me some sign and trades in recent NFL history......
BTW McNabb's situation is not comparable at all with this one....
The McNabb situation isnt THAT different. But here are some blockbuster.
1) The Cowboys traded H.Walker at the END of his career for 18 draft picks.
2) The Bears trade their first round pick ( # 11 ) for Mirer and a fourth round pick. . . and we all know how good Rick Mirer was. . .
3) Dallas gave two 1st rounders to Seattle for J.Galloway
4) Dallas gave the Lions a 1st, 3rd and a 6th for Roy Williams.
All I am saying is that we should use A.Smith as a chip one way or another. Not let him walk away when there is clearly a market for QBs and people still support him in the media and NFL. If they didnt, they would protect him like a baby and make excuses for him. Thats all am suggesting
None of those were/are sign and trades. You don't resign players in the NFL to use as bargaining chips.
The only trade up top you listed that is recent is Roy Williams and Jerry Jones though a lot more of Romo and Garrett at the time than he does now in all likelihood. Romo was coming off a 4000 yard season, whilst Williams was finally starting to really come around or so it seemed and Garrett had the Cowboys offense in the top 5. He was enamored with the possibility of making the offense even more explosive.
Alex Smith is not producing as a QB like Williams was as a WR. His value is next to nothing, and while teams will be looking for QB upgrades, there will be options in FA and the draft + better options via trade.
You are reaching with this idea, really reaching. Nobody is trading for Alex Smith in the offseason of we resign him. NOBODY.
QB's that can be had possibly :
Matt Hasslebeck
Kerry Collins
Billy Volek
Bruce Gradkowski
Troy Smith
Tavaris Jackson
Seneca Wallace
Matt Moore
Trent Edwards
+ Vince Young, Kevin Kolb, Jake Delhomme (Wallace could possibly resigned if Delhomme is traded or cut), Carson Palmer, Tony Romo & Jimmy Clausen are potential guys who could end up be traded.
Not to mention possibly 4 first round QB's could be in this draft class.

There are alot of teams out there with a need at the QB position and I personally want some kind of severance from Alex since he got 40 million severance from our organization.
I would like to see the 49ers tag him or resign him to a league minimal and then give him the Shaun Hill Special. Trade him to another team for draft picks. I mean put him under contract, and shop his sorry a** like Paris Hilton on the Vegas strip!! As hard as it is to believe there are still A.Smith supporters in the media, organization and fan base. So since there is clearly still a market for him, we need to do what we have been taught all these years and trade him to secure two 3rd or 4th rounders.
I might be alone on this, but after everything that the fans, organization, and anyone associated with the 49ers have been through in the last 6 years, just letting A.Smith walk away free and clear is not only a mistake but it is an unforgivable one. . .
40 posts and you are under the impression everybody knows your opinion about Alex Smith.
You can't force a player to re-sign for the league minimum. Do a little research. And if we tag him, do a little more research and find out what that will cost the team.
So you probably are utterly alone with your opinion expressed in the last paragraph. Because it is not a mistake. Nor is it unforgivable. It is in fact the only option short of negotiating another contract with him.
Research.

Um, he had a 2 year contract, and he has never been on the open market. He WILL get takers when he hits the open market, probably as a #2 QB (i.e. see Carr). I can also see him going somewhere that is desperate for a QB like Arizona. He won't be offered the starting job outright, but he probably will be able to compete for a starting job.
Alex Smith is a former #1 pick that is still quite young. Some teams will give him a chance to see if his problem was SF, and not his own talents.

Worse yet, Pete Carroll takes him and turns him into Mark Sanchez West. That would GREATLY incur my ire.

I would use the 4th rounder traded for him on a CB.

In this thread as well?
It just isn't going to happen. Tagging him then trying to trade him with that contract? Laughable.

Waterboy.
But with his luck, he'll probably overthrow the cup of water that he's about to hand to a player.
