keep troy smith to compete in camp and likely be our backup
draft a rookie QB (high)
get a veteran free agent (no big name just someone who has had some success in the past)
Except that if we don't like Alex Smith, the list of FAs that will be available next season would all be second string to Alex Smith.
I'm telling you guys, after the top 10 or 12 teams, the quality of QB play in this league is PPPPPoor. There aren't any FA QBs that are worth spending money on. Other teams see it and they aren't going to let anyone of decent quality walk. As bad as it sounds, Alex is as good or better than anyone out there. (I'm not counting guys like Vick because he won't be on the market.)
It won't matter though because Alex won't agree to stay here, IMO, and so it will be Troy and a rookie plus a career backup like a Mark Brunnell. That is what is out there in the way of FA QBs.

Are we done thinking Troy Smith is doing good?

Have you guys not noticed, the turnovers?
Yes, Troy has had a couple. But for Alex, that's in each game. 2int or 1int + 1fmb.
But yes, Troy is a serviceable backup! Let's just hope our "gm" doesn't want our next QB scared of competition and trade him away.

I agree. I thought he played pretty well against the Pack. The 9ers were hurt by the lame calls in the red zone, and the big drop by Davis, not by Troy.

It was pretty funny.
There wasn't anything seriously wrong with it that I see that I can think of.

The problem is the play calling not Troy Smith (to a degree). Have you noticed that Receivers are no longer running the wrong route? When Alex was playing every week there was an issue because supposedly the receiver was not where he was supposed to be. Did everyone learn the play-book when Troy started? I don't think so.
I'm not saying Troy will be our franchise QB, but he is clearly the best we have. Until we get someone clearly better, let the man play.

Hard to believe that a team has a championship future, when its long reliever is pressed into duty as the ace of the starting staff.

I've noticed the SMS generation having problems with spelling and grammar as well. Maybe trying to convey intelligent thoughts and opinions in 160 characters is too much to ask.

Grammer is over-rated.

The bolded here was just one of a few advantages for Troy vs Alex. When you start out a season, it can take time for everyone to get on the same page... to get in sync... to build chemistry. By the time the harder opponents were played... the time Alex was injured and Troy entered... the OL started playing a bit better... the receivers were more in tune with their assignments... and M.J. was evolving his game as an OC.
What was disappointing to me with the TB and GB games... is that plenty of times, Troy had good protection... and he either pizzed it away with his feet or simply not being able to find a target with 3+ seconds. Can he get better? Sure... maybe. But I still don't think he gives SF the best chance to win at this time.

Might as well. Season is shot anyway and then we'll know if we should hang on to him or not.

How many years of Alex do you need to convince you he doesn't either?

Yup, a lot of us (including myself) jumped the gun at him. He is a (good) backup.

Just one year of decent playcalling, OL blocking, and receiver competency would have sufficed.
... but we couldn't provide a respectable level of any of those... and when we started to? Anthony Davis whiffs on a pass rusher vs Carolina...
