That you could expect a house-cleaning in the offseason, not just from the coaching staff, but perhaps the front office.

Quote:
I think that, like I did, and like everybody else in the league at some point in time has done, there’s been some mistakes made. But you always make some mistakes. And Jed has done a lot of things absolutely right on.

I will say that there’s a lot of people in that front office. He probably has to pare that down. He’s going to have to be the boss and he’s going to be the person where the buck stops. That’s going to be have to be something that he’s going to have to do.

Not being there and not knowing the way operation works, it still seems to me that there’s a lot of people in the front office. But whatever they have and whatever group of people they have working on the stadium, that doesn’t count, that’s a whole separate entity.

But not counting them, there still seems to be quite a few people in the front office. I’m comparing it to what we did. When I owned the team we had a very, very lean organization. At least I think so.

At the top it was myself, Carmen, Bill and John McVay. Keith Simon was the vice president and controller. And that basically, along with the department heads that did various things, was it
.

It was a different time and it was almost a different era. But we still had our scouting departments and we still had pro and college scouting. It’s not that much different.

Jed’s a great learner. He’s taking everything in and I think what he’s going to do, he’s going to come out of this, once this stadium thing gets rolling and once this year–hey, they’re still one game behind in the NFC west…

I talked to him the other day, before the game… I knew they were going to win the game.

I did talk to him and my sister and I said I would not worry about that game at all.

Jed will do fine. He’s a kid that truly takes everything in and wants to do the very best that he can and he wants to learn by… sometimes you have to learn by losing. He’s done that.

And I think he’s going to be a much better and stronger executive from what they’ve gone through.

Look at this season–I would’ve given anything in some of our poorer years to have an opportunity like they have of only being one game behind in a division that is… let’s admit it, it’s weak.

Just one game behind with five games to play? My God. I’d have given Ronnie’s pinkie finger for that. (laughs)

All in all, if people leave Jed alone and he just goes about his business trying to be an executive and doing the best he can, the season’s going to play itself out. They’re either going to have a chance to win the division. They certainly won’t be a wild card.

If that happens, that would be wonderful. If not, he’s going to have to regroup and make some real, real tough decisions, which he will do.

And they will get busy on the stadium which they desperately need for revenue and income, and go on with the franchise.

-Q: How many parallels do you see between Jed now and you right before you hired Bill Walsh? Do you see similarities in the situations?

-DeBARTOLO: I do. But it was a different time. You’re going back years and years and we had a different type of an organization. We had no salary cap. We had a very lean front office and just very few people who made decisions.

You have to adapt and I think Jed will adapt with the people he has and he will make the right decisions.

He knows as well as anybody knows is the key to anything right now is getting that stadium off dead center and getting it started. Obviously you have to start with the people he has around him, concentrate on the draft and obviously the coaching staff, whatever he decides to do with the coaching staff.

But he’s going to make those decisions. In my opinion, he’s going to make the right decisions. I just like the way he’s thinking
.

-Q: So it sounds like you’re saying Jed’s ready to make some big changes.

-DeBARTOLO: I don’t think there’s any question. Whatever he feels as though he has to do, he’ll do it and he won’t look back.

I mean that sincerely. He’s a young man who has learned a lot in the last year or two. He’s a lot tougher than people give him credit for. He’s got his convictions. He’s younger than I was. I think he’ll stick by his convictions.

He’ll take advice from the right people that he has around him and then he’ll put everything in the grinder and make his own decision or decisions….

I didnt read it that way. I took it as he was saying he would leave the NFL game to younger guys like Jed.

He did say that he thought big changes would be coming though.
I'm curious what this means? I wonder what kind of changes could be in store. My guess is that Jed/Paraag would stay and everyone else goes. I wonder how tied at the hip, Jed and Paraag are?

Eddie D on Jed, if 49ers miss playoffs: "He’s going to have to regroup & make some real, real tough decisions, which he will do."

This is why the 49ers MUST miss the playoffs, because I know if they make it in that Sing will be back next year.

Changes must be made and the only way to guarantee them is by losing now.
