Anyone who thinks there is a better option that Alex Smith currently on the roster is just freakin' NUTS.
David Carr!?! Seriously?
This kinda stuff just drives me crazy. Whenever a starting QB in the NFL is struggling, the most popular player on a team is the #2 QB.
The problem is that most of the time they are #2 FOR A REASON. I don't often say stuff like this in the Zone, but David Carr flat SUCKS. He holds the ball WAY, WAY too long and is an inaccurate passer who is STILL LEARNING THE OFFENSE.
The best way to put the nail on the coffin of this season is to put in David Carr.
Stick with Alex Smith. He is your best option right now.
Even if he can't do it and the season is tanked (and at 0-4 we are close), you now KNOW he can't do it. You move on next year.
Alex hasn't played well...no question. He has thrown some picks that were bad (the Gore tip yesterday, the Gore tip against the Saints, and the out pattern to Crabtree vs. the Seahawks. The other 4 tho aren't that bad. A tip that Crabtree could have caught against the Seahawks, What could have been a TD to Crabtree vs the Saints (GREAT play be the DE), Crabtree not flashing in front of a DB like he was supposed to vs. the Chiefs, and a great play by the DB yesterday to leave VD and intercept the pass to Morgan.
If you watch the replay on that last one, you can see that there was no way Alex could have seen the guy. He was screened by the Tackle and was throwing in a lane. 9/10 NFL QBs would have thrown that pass.
Yes...I can hear you already....excuses, excuses. I'm not trying tio excuse his play. I'm trying to illustrate that he hasn't played as badly as some think and that he's not the reason they are losing. If Phillip Adams and Delanie Walker don't fumble vs. the Saints....its probably a win. If Nate Clements doesn't fumble, it IS a win.
The WORST thing you can do right now is make ANOTHER change. David Carr or even Nate Davis at QB does only one thing. It assures us that we are picking in the top 5 of the draft next year.
This season reminds me of a few years ago when the Niners were expected to do great things. Then they struggles a bit on O under Jeff Hostler and people wanted Alexs head. Then he got hurt and we saw when REAL horrible QB play looked like and ended up with a really high draft pick.
THAT is what will happen if David Carr becomes the starter.

If we go with Carr now, would we have a Titan like Return of V Young turnaround?

The thing is, the 49ers have not had a good quarterback on their roster since Garcia. Nobody currently on the team is an upgrade if you rotate them up the depth chart.
I don't believe they think they need to get a great quarterback with the current regime running this team. Which is why we don't see any sense of urgency from them when that position never improves much.

Compared to David Carr, Alex Smith has the pocket mobility of a Steve Young or a Michael Vick.

the qb of the future is NOT on this roster. and i don't belive that any of the qbs here will make a be any better then what we have starting now. that said, it wouldnt be terrible to make a change to carr or davis for a week or two then try alex again. maybe sitting him will slow things down. i think alex is the best qb on the roster. but by no means should we enter next year with any of these qbs starting or at the very least counting on any of them as the future. there should b a #1 pick/franchise type QB that should be drafted and groomed to be the QB of the future. ofcourse we also need a new coach w experience and the return of the west coast offense. if those three things don't happen next year, we will b in the same position again. just my thoughts. i suppose a good FA qb can be had but i'd rather not have someone else's garbage. i'd rather blow up this mess and start a new.

The initial point of this thread is a good one. My biggest fear going in was that Smith would be just sort of ok and the team would just sort of be ok and so the whole thing would repeat.
It would be Groundhog Year, every year.
The only hope, other than York taking charge as a responsible owner, is that the team tanks badly and soon so that there is no choice but to move on.

Come on guys lets try something new. No hope is like a disease. Players believe that Alex is not the one to lead them.
It festers, then it festers... soon what the niners will have are a bunch of underachieving players.

Told you.....
Smith = Loser,
Carr = Loser who was loser even before Smith
Singletary = dumba** loser who picked these two players to be his top two QBs.
Just remember, Singletary had to be convinced to draft Willis. That's how dumb he is.
