I know Singletary wants to be a power running team. And against weak run defenses like the Saints (ask Gore, AP, and Snelling) that might work. But against a better run team like the Chiefs you have to adjust.
Smith skills are reflected in a spread formation. He has shown he can move the ball in 2 minute drills and he can make reads. According to Beerows, it took the Niners 57 minutes of game time before they sent in a 3 WR set. And according to Maiocco, the Chiefs staff was so prepared, they frequently guessed the play based on personell groups in our huddle.
It was almost like the game plan and only game plan was to run Gore today. Even Fox's Chris Myers reported from the sideline that Smith was questioning QB coach Mike Johnson from the bench, why so many run plays when we were down 2 scores. According to Myers, M. Johnson's response, "Just hang in there."
Now Singletary has vowed to make some hard decisions, but does that include having less of a power running game, and being more of a passing to set up the run team? Even if there are some game plan changes is that the best for the team right now, seeing that 80% of Smiths INTs this year have gone to our most talented WR.
All I know is this is the toughest part of our schedule. At the beginning of the year I was hoping we would be 2-3 after our first 5 games. Therefore I'm hoping to see changes for the better next week. We need a win against a team we don't match up well against. We need to move the ball, and help our o-line, which will help the offense, which will help our team. Open it up, and have an balanced attack please.

Power running failure in '09 lead to more spread. Is that the answer now?

Well more power running sure isn't the answer. I don't even get why we kept passing with Norris in the game, dude is a non threat. Should pass from the I formation unless it's a play action or something.

I think it's pretty simple. The coaches are unable to figure out and take what the defenses are giving them. They make a game plan, the go play and if the plan works all is well. If it doesn't, they don't seem capable of figuring what it is the defense is giving them so we can go and take it.

If you watched the game today, there were several sequences where the commentators replayed and talked about the pathetic amount of push that our line was getting against the Chiefs' DL.
It's funny, I was watching USC play yesterday, and despite their flaws at the moment, their one saving grace was their OL, and how effortlessly they were pushing Washington State's DL around....they were dominating so badly that they were pushing the WSU DL into the second level, and all the SC backs had to do was dance behind them and pick their spots.
It effectively erased several execution errors by the SC QB and several defensive lapses as well.
Bottomline, if you can run the ball, it starts with the OL, and our line is just not getting it done. Singletary seems to be in denial about this.
If you can see that running is not working, you have to win another way. You can pass, you can spread out the D, you can throw screens, you can run bootlegs and rollouts, and you can run misdirection plays.
You can't keep just running headlong into a defense which has stacked the box and is daring you to pass.

isn't WSU a glorified HS team? I know what you're saying but WSU sucks pretty bad, even we could get our first win against them.

I'm glad Mike Johnson took a year off his NFL career to travel around and learn about different types of spread offenses.

He has his chance now. Hopefully his game is light years ahead of Raye. I think the spread will benefit a lot of our players. Not to mention Gore won't have to run innto a wall anymore.

"dingleberry" LOL! I think we need to be a spread first offense! Otherwise teams just load up the box and stop us!
