situations where neither oc/hc call plays?

Are there situations people know of where neither the oc or the hc call the plays? I don't have much faith for the season but for all of our hope so and so gets fired, it's not realistic that it will happen. that said, wondering about what changes are realistic to hope for/expect. As limited as the playbook appears to be, I wouldn't mind someone else with a grasp at it give it a go at trying to dial up the right plays at the right time, something we can agree isn't happening now. The run is way too predictable, as evident by the 8 in the box on second downs, etc....
