As you can see, Niner fans think Smith has finally arrived.

Other than the two INTs', Smith had a MUCH better day throwing the ball than Brees.

Smith went deep and the balls were caught.

Brees was off the mark on the times he did go deep.

Smith hit his Intermediate targets, Brees had ONE catch in that Range.

Smith had the two short yard Interceptions off of tipped Passes. One of which should have dropped harmlessly to the turf.

Nobody thinks Smith has arrived. We just want to give credit where it's due.

I got tired of your wet blanket act and tossed it in the dryer. You can have it back when the buzzer sounds. I was even nice enough to drop a couple softener sheets in with it so you won't have anything more to complain about.

If you ask any Saints fan what they would grade Brees's play on Monday night, Im sure no one would crown him the way you guys crowned Smith. He had a pretty bad day, and thats saying a lot for a guy that had ZERO turnovers and led his team for a gamewinning drive in less than 90 seconds.

As others have pointed out, you guys have become so enamored with Alex Smith that you only compare him to....well.........Alex Smith. You're more impressed with his play because he did what he usually doesnt do. He made some good plays, and led a decent final drive......of course, his players had to bail him out a few times when he threw some high passes, etc. but that seems to be lost in the conversation.

The point is that somewhere along the line you people need to stop comparing Alex Smith 2010 to Alex Smith 2005, Alex Smith 2006, Alex Smith 2008, and Alex Smith 2009. If you're gonna paint a playoff picture in the NFC, the quarterbacks that the Niners will be facing are:

Drew Brees
Aaron Rodgers
Tony Romo (maybe)
Donovan McNabb (maybe)
Matt Ryan
Brett Favre
Michael Vick
Eli Manning (maybe)

If you had to compare Smith to any one of those guys at this point of his career, knowing that he is a 6th year veteran that was drafted number 1 overall, where exactly would you place him amongst those guys ?

Yeah, exactly...........

IT'S A THREAD RATING ALEX SMITH TO... *GASP*... ALEX SMITH!!!!

Being only two games into the season it's a bit premature to rate him comparatively to EVERYBODY ELSE.

So OF COURSE we're going to rate him high because over the last 6 years he has shown glimpses but nothing like this. Holy crap, man don't you EVER stop whining?

Which high passes are you referring to? The ones that the Jaws and Gruden pointed out him putting it up so only THE RECEIVER can get it? I guess Steve has been retired too long cause he used to do that A LOT and I bet you were kissing his azz about it too.

But, let me state yet AGAIN, this thread is titled "RATE SMITH'S PERFORMANCE". Do you get it yet?

"RATE SMITH'S PERFORMANCE"

How bout now?

"RATE SMITH'S PERFORMANCE"

Is it beginning to take yet?

"RATE SMITH'S PERFORMANCE"

Making a dent in that thick melon on the top of your shoulders yet?

"RATE SMITH'S PERFORMANCE"

Oh wait maybe you don't understand what this entails exactly

You take the peformance of one ALEX SMITH AND COMPARE IT TO *OHHHHHHHHHH* ONE ALEX SMITH.

So have you got it yet? Do I have to dumb it down FURTHER for you or you think you can cope now?

Geezus man how much more obtuse can any one man be.

Nobody is saying MVP. We're RATING SMITH based on SMITH. DUH!

~Ceadder

My point exactly. There's a reason why, after 6 years, these threads continue to pop up. Alex isnt good enough to compare to anyone else, so why not just compare him to himself..........

Go sift through this entire thread, and you'll find a lot of your fellow brethren giving Alex props as if he just won the Superbowl. Im just pointing out the obvious; I apologize if you take it as an insult. I know you've spent a considerable amount of your posting energy defending Alex Smith over the past couple years, but hey..the truth hurts.

I guess if we're comparing Alex Smith to Alex Smith, then a 1TD 2INT performance deserves an A+, and in my book........Alex Smith belongs in the Alex Smith Hall of Fame.

Happy ?

This proves that you just want to win an argument. You guys always bring up that it doesn't matter about the stats because Smith doesn't have "it", or doesn't look like a real NFL QB. So instead of seeing the obvious fact that he was playing like a top level QB the other night, you hold on to some meaningless stat like 1 TD. You do know that he drove them down the field for 2 TD's with the majority being passes in the second half right? The niners happened to run the ball in, but the fact that he didn't pass the ball in to the endzone doesn't change the fact that he was playing at a very high level. Like I said, a joke.

Rating Alex's performance on Monday night I would also give him a B.

I am skeptical that he can perform like this all year, but hopeful. I hope for all of our sakes that he plays like this for the rest of the year. I am just tired of mediocrity and I don't want to rebuild again! If Alex doesn't succeed this year, it will definitely be the end of Alex and probably Singletary and crew; and that would set us back another 2 or 3 years.

If you subscribe to tunnel vision and nonsensical logic....i guess he got owned.....but imo Ceadder just made himself look foolish. After two games why not compare Alex to other proffesionals in the NFL. I mean comparisons are usually made to ones peers. If Ceadder doesn;t feel Alex is a peer to guys like Brady and Manning then I would agree, cause those guys are light years diffence in ragard to their jobs.

How the hell can you compare one to himself and expect to get a comparison? Compare usually means to take object A: (Alex) and then compare it to object B: (Alex again? ) and then identify the difference.

See it makes absolutely no sense. Alex Smith looked good this last weekend if you compare him to his career of suck, but compared to successful QB's in the league it was a down game and NOTHING any of their fans would be pleased with, and THAT is the only friken comparison that matters in the long run.

How does Smith compare to successful QB's? Thats how he should be "Rated" not against his career of suck.

Links to quotes or it didn't happen, but IF Gruden really said that, he must have been drunk or high.

Alex Smith has NEVER looked as good as a QB can, and any Niners fan knows this. We have seen QB's look as good as they can wearing our jersey and Smith has NEVER EVER looked good as Young or Montana....hell he's never looked as good as Jeff the duck thrower Garcia for christs sake.....

It's not about winning an argument. It's about holding a 6 year veteran who has accomplished nothing in his career to certain standards. What Alex Smith did yesterday is nothing different from what he's shown us before. Just off of my head I can recount the game he had against Seattle a few years back on Thursday night, when he led the Niners to a win and everyone was up in arms as to claim that Smith had finally "arrived". Hell, even Frank Gore did a postgame interview praising how Alex was a hero.

All Im saying is that Alex's accomplishments this past week shouldnt be interpreted as future trends, but rather be noted as a "been there, seen that" observation. Alex has shown to be inconsistent many times in his career. A lot of you guys are pretending that Week 1's debacle was a fluke on his part, when in reality it was a better representation of how he plays as opposed to week 2.

Consistency is the key year. Unfortunately, his supporters would rather breakdown his career into individual performances rather than lump sum his entire career, which has really been a failure to say the least.

As for this past week's performance, he had 2 costly turnovers. One led to points for the Saints, and the other killed a potential scoring drive. Was the second one necessarily his fault ? No. But it did cost us points, so we cant "pretend" it didnt happen. If 1TD 2INTs is considered a success in the Bay Area, then all the power to you. But any other playoff QB would not be given the credit, nor the praise, that Smith has been receiving this past week.

So I guess that Steve Young knows less than you do about playing QB, Gruden also said he looked as good as a QB could. Man you are awesome!

Career football professionals aint got nothing on internet forum amateurs!

The posters that point out Young and Gruden's comments are the same guys that thought Steve had "lost his mind" and "didnt know football" when he called out Smith for not being able to play under center last season. They also attacked Young when he criticized Smith a couple years back. Hell, they jumped on Rice when he proclaimed Alex a bust 3 years ago.

I find it ironic that Memphis is quick to point out Young/Gruden's praise of Smith, when he's usually one of the first to label analysts as "duds" and "tools" when they label Smith as a bust.

It's funny actually. A 6 year veteran still being compared to himself. I could see someone doing it to a rookie fresh out of college, cause you cant compare how a rookie plays to veterans in the league. But we're talking about a 6 year veteran with 40 games plus under his belt, and we're still comparing his play to himself.
OK, for ~Ceadder, if I'm going to rate Smith's performance based on himself, I guess I could give him a high B...I mean, compared to his performance in the previous week, there was significant improvement, which I guess accounts for something.

Now if I'm going to RATE ALEX SMITH'S PERFORMANCE strictly against the Saints, not comparing himself to himself, but simply rating his performance that game in isolation of anything else, I'd actually give him a C, maybe a low B. He threw two picks, made some bad throws, made some mistakes, and the 49ers lost the game. Sure, there were portions of the game that looked like A material, but there were D portions as well. So I think averaging everything out over the course of the entire game...C.

Rate Alex Smith's performance against the Saints

I gotta give him a B- or an 8 outta 10.

My reasons:

I thought he was a bit shaky in the beginning with his inaccuracy on his short routes with turnovers. What I liked about him was his leadership on the field, competitiveness, his awareness in the pocket, will to win. Unlike last week, where his attitude or body language just didn't seem to be in the game nor did he show a sense of urgency. In this past Monday, he showed it all, everything I always got excited for, I always hoped he would turn into a Matt Hasselbeck type of QB, at times he shows it, at times he shows Giovanni Carmazzi or excuse me, Ryan Leaf.

I don't think Carmazzi ever got into an actual game.

True, but I was talking more mechanical wise and decision making wise, from what Gio showed in Preseason.

Wanna show me how to link MNF broadcasts? Man every time you post you lose credibility. You lack any objectivity on this subject it has become quite plain to see. There is no way you are ignorant enough to actually believe the crap you post, you must just be looking for an argument. Anyway, have fun spouting hyperbole and denying reality because it doesn't jibe with your highly inaccurate opinion.
I would still say a B. The fact is, he still threw two picks and we didn't win the game. You could argue about great defensive plays, which they were, but the fact is, they are still picks.

At this point, he stands with 1 TD and 4 INTs. The sample is still wayyy too small to make a determination for the season, but he has to consistently play well for us to succeed. A good QB will overcome the problems that arise when other areas of the team are not performing well.
