If Alex Smith continues to play at or near the level he played tonight, we will win the division. Count on it.
Too many turnovers against the SB champs sealed our fate no doubt.

They moved the ball well on almost every possession. Smith looked good on more than 2 drives... you are reaching.
Yes, yes and yes.
But he also turned the ball over twice.
Look -- I hear what you're saying. I really do. But hear me as well. An NFL QB cannot continue to turn the ball over like this. No -- no more excuses please. This is becoming a regular scene for Alex Smith. He plays well -- then gives up a boneheaded pick. We've seen this time and again. It has to stop.
It hasn't. I don't know if it ever will.
But when the game was on the line he led the team down and got them 8pts. Something Alex has lacked in the past. Alex can't do anything about the defense letting the Saints get a FG to win the game. Yes his picks were huge but at the same time Alex gave us the oppurtunity to take the game into OT. Unfortunatly our defense couldn't stop Brees and they won the game.

0-2...so what.
LETS GO 49ERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alex threw two picks. Gore was wide open, and Alex threw a bad pass which ended up being tipped. The second pick was tipped again, and that is Alex's fault for not throwing it over the defender.
oh shut up, you act like other QBs never have a pass get away from them. no QB in the NFL ever puts it dead on in the perfect spot every time. are our receivers just incapable of catching something thats a little off like the rest of the nfl's receivers do on a daily basis? why do u see greg jennings, andre johnson, randy moss, ochocinco... all making circus catches? that pass to gore was on alex but the other was just a great defensive play by the LB. only this site could find something to b***h about when the guy played a hell of a game tonight. did u see him roll for 82 yards in 50 seconds and then score on the 2 point conversion as well? im sure it was alex fault the ball was snapped into the endzone too. and he shouldve been playing DB at the end of the game on that long pass to set up the FG. probably shoulda blocked that kick too now that i think about it.

Smith proved he's a far better QB than many give him credit for. All this "he can't drive us down when we need points in the clutch" bull crap was displayed for what it is: bull crap.
As a team, if we eliminate our mistakes, we are an absolutely scary team to play against. We just can't beat ourselves. If the 49ers can limit their turnovers tonight, it may have been a 31-14 blowout. We have the talent -- the skill is there -- we just need to focus and come out far, far sharper. We need to cut down on the avoidable mistakes.
Protect the ball, secure the catch, don't take risks, SNAP the freaking ball properly.

Funny how everybody gets blamed but there's not a mention of a muffed punt return which allowed the Saints to score a field goal. ... and it could have been worse

A rare disagreement.
Brees did not turn the ball over. Period.
Alex through two killing picks and was almost responsible for a third.
In my book? Brees wins this matchup.
A. Smith played great...i'll reluctantly blame him for the INT on the pass to Gore but that's it. Anyone watching the game can see that he played really well and that the niners, as a team, had some unfortunate plays go against them that cost them the game against the defending CHAMPS...you cant say we lost because of Smith. Clean up those mistakes and we'll be alright. The rest of the division foes dont scare me..the seahawks game was a fluke

If Gore doesnt throw one hand out and tips it, at worse its INC.
I knew somebody would make a sorry attempt at blaming Gore for that INT instead of Alex. If Alex threw it accurately, there would either be a catch or a drop, but no INT. That was Alex's fault. Gore was wide open.
No reason a close range pass should have the receiver extending like that
But smith got it together, don't think any other qb on our roster could have played like that, I was surprised he didn't buckle
and it was a throw when he had the rush bearing down on him.
And he adjusted later in the game when gore had the receiving td, he best a blitz from the left

Even when you blame the one interception on Alex Smith, under normal football play, that shouldn't have been the game changer.
Oversnap for a safety, muffed punts, that gimme-fieldgoal at the end of the game?
Clearly not Alex Smith's fault.

Game tonight Alex minus the mental errors this team came to ball I loved it. If we can play and stay focused we COULD possible go 10-6 or 11-5 possibly

Drew Brees almost threw 2 Ints that would have been killers. Reggie SMith barely missed an INT and Lawson had one his hands. We get either one of those and we win the game. Brees Played well but so did Alex.
Brees got the ball last andd that was the difference

Cosigned. And people were jerking themselves off over Hill getting 300 and 2TDs in a loss but he threw 2 picks too. Smith does it with 1 of them being a freak accident and leads the game to a tying score as well as on other drives where we should've scored and he sucks. He played well tonight.

Brees is lucky he didnt have a few picks himself. Some of those passes he threw were waaaay off.
Way off -- but not batted up in the air where an opponent was/is waiting.
I'll agree that Alex Smith has some of the worst luck on this planet.
But it's more than just bad luck.
We've seen this before. As good as he played -- and I'll admit he ASTONISHED ME at times -- he still threw two very killer picks.
You just can't continue to do that. I'm sorry -- there are no more excuses. He simply cannot continue to throw passes that either get picked or bounce off someone else and get picked.
The one tipped off of Gore was on Alex. The other tipped by the lineman (or lb?) was just a great play by the defense imo. As pointed out the NT dropped back in coverage rather than playing the line of scrimmage, putting himself in position to intercept the (also impressive) tipped ball. Everything worked against Alex on that play.
The botched snap and the muffed punt were the two that hurt me the most.

I would say winner for most ignorant post of the night.... but the night is still young and you have some stiff competition!
