You know, if there is any one single play of this game that bothered me the most, it was the fumbled punt return... There was no excuse to touch that ball, and considering how close Adams came to blowing a punt return earlier in the game, you would think he would have learned his lesson.
He attempted to catch the ball, and step out of bounds... Why?
Why not just get out of the way?
There is no excuse in the world Adams could give me, if I were the coach, that would enable me to allow him to return a punt for my team EVER again. Period. In my view it was that bad.
So the question is what do we do now? Ginn is hurt, Williams is hurt, and really there is nobody else who jumps out at you to return punts. That being said, I honestly feel that Adams should not ever go back to return a punt for the 49ers, and that Ziegler or Walker should be put back there, until Ginn, and/or, Williams returns.
Thoughts?

I want to know why our tight end is returning kickoffs, I don't think Walker took it past the 20 once.
Out of all the speed we have on the team they can't find anyone better than Walker who coughed one up this game, so what makes him so special taking it out of the endzone?

If you ask me....that muffed punt costed us the game despite the turnovers and penalties. We would have driven down the field, taken time off the clock with Gore and scored a TD. But of course......we had to make a mistake like that.
Its like when we're doing so good.....you almost expect something like that to happen with this team. I'm a die hard niner fan....but dayam man! Very heartbreaking tonite.
We would have been the talk of the nation on ESPN, FOX, etc. Would have been nice to shut all the naysayers.

Don't really blame Adams, he's inexperienced and only put in that position because Kyle Williams and Ginn are hurt.

I wondering if he was going to touch the ball, why not just BAT THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS? Whats the point of even attempting to catch it?
Look at Alex Smith on the safety, he does the smart thing and bat the ball out of bounds.
We have some players on our team that I'm surprised they graduated High School.

I agree that he is inexperienced, and he is only there because of the injuries.
However, I don't think you allow that inexperience to continue to hurt the team. No?

I'd have to agree with you. That was painful to watch. The winds are swirling down there and it's been a problem for returners on BOTH sides of the field. Why not just let it go?

if we're not using Westbrook on offense, might as well put him back there for punts since he's had experience doing it and I imagine he's alot more surehanded

Naw, I'm blaming Adams. No excuses in the NFL, especially in that situation. His dumb ass shouldn't of touched that. Bottom line.

I put this squarely on coach Singletary. He saw his ROOKIE punt returner almost muff one earlier, yet he kept him in there during crunch time. Put morgan in there to jus catch the dang thing, and give us a chance to win. Why put so much pressure on a ROOKIE during such a freakin important and decisive time in the game? MIND BOGGLING. FFFFFFFFFF********KKKKKK

I agree that Sing shares in the accountability.
I remember during camp, Sing was talking about using Ziegler as an emergency punt returner, as he was "steady". I think that was something that was called for in that situation.

Returning punts is too dangerous for Westbrook with his concussion history. I don't think that would be a great idea.

Speaking of punts, next week in KC, does anyone remember what KC did to San Diego on special teams on Monday night? We better get our stuff together if not McCluster & Arenas are going to tear us a new one
