So I'm watching this post-game with Steve Young, Stuart Scott, and Matt Millen (?)...
I think they're misunderstanding his point, but I think I agree with him. He's saying the 49ers offense has a lot of talent. While Alex Smith and the offense looked good, he think there's A LOT of talent on the offense and are capable of being an explosive offense, but we're not quite putting it together yet.
In a sense, I think most would agree that, based on tonight, we're a top 16 offense. But I think Steve Young is saying we're talented enough to be a top 10, maybe top 5 offense.
He's saying that we should be dominating these games, rather than playing close, because who knows what happens with those close games?
I just thought it was an interesting viewpoint. Of course, it's understandable he says this. He was the leader of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history. But it's definitely a different ideology from the defense-first perspective we've had the last couple years.

Interesting Steve Young thoughts on the offense...

You can't win games with a -4 TO ratio though. :(

Yeah
Young said we have the talent, but we cant connect all the dots consistently.
Like why couldnt we do this last week, but then today 430 yards.
Whats going to happen next week in another hostile enviornment

That IS so true.
He didn't say it, but you almost get the sense that he wanted to imply we need more killer instinct on offense.
Most weeks, I think that's true, but not necessarily this week. The turnovers were what killed us. The botched snap that lead to a safety... the tipped balls (I credit the Saints defense for that though)... the fumbles... the muffs.

I completely agree. We shot ourselves in the foot. Regardless who you want to blame this loss on...we win as a team and lose as a team.

In essence, he was saying "been there, heard that". The Niners have been talking about being the "it" team of the NFL ever since they drafted Smith. It's never happened because we're too god damn inconsistent. All cylinders never click. Sometimes the QB sucks.........sometimes the oline is off......sometimes the D takes a day off......and today, well.......our STs decided that they wouldnt figure into the game.
It's damn pathetic and Young basically told Millen and Scott that he (like the rest of us) is sick of hearing all the moral victories that come out of our losses. It's time to put up, or move the f**k along. There's no point we should be a "project" team in our 6th year of rebuild mode.
You people can take all the "positives" from this game all you want, but Ive seen a bunch of these over the past 6 years. There are NO moral victories when you have a QB thats a 6 year veteran and you're still wondering if he's the future. There's no MORAL victories when you pay defenders outrageous contracts and they can barely cover their part of the field. There are no MORAL victories for a team that turns the ball over 3 times inside the opponent's 30 yard line.
The new Niner fanbase is lame and pathetic. Browsing Ninertalk, you'd think we won the SB. And when you call people out on it, the only response you get is :hey, back off man........we competed with the SB champs. Thats good enough."
Shameful.........

He was praising Alex like crazy. And kept saying we should have been throwing all day with Alex playing like that.

Alex Smith's wristband did a great job of getting the plays in on time

Yeah, Crabtree, explosive.
That play where he was sitting on the ground and practically dropped the ball. Everyone needs work.

F**kin This!
The training wheels should have been off 2 years ago...Consistency equals respect. Everyone knew that Breesus Christ was gonna move the ball with a minute to play...why? Because he's done it several times before. Alex has 14 more games to show that he can be a consistently good QB. Sure, he played well today, but he's always shown Flashes. No consistency.
Limit the mistakes and ball like this on a regular, then we can continue a legitimate discussion regarding this squad..
