I was reading an article on the pistol offense, then went to a coaching forum to see what all the buzz is about.
The pistol might just be the perfect offense for the Niners. It employs a modified shotgun snap, and the spread passing attack. It does employ some option running, that would put Alex at risk, so that part of the offense would be used sparingly, say goal line much like a naked boot.
Here is the interesting part, the base formation is an I formation, with the QB lining up in the fullbacks spot and the tail back behind him, where a back traditional lines up if a QB is under center.
The spread look, puts pressure on defenses to set the edges wide, increased gap size between offensive linemen creates more natural running lanes between the tackles.
The run game includes stretch zone runs at the edges as well as traditional power blocking schemes favored by Singletary. This offense puts Alex in the gun, and Frank in the I, both of our key offensive backfield starters in their favorite looks, seems like a winner.
I know it is too late to really incorporate it this year, but I feel that next season Raye may not be the OC, and Mike Johnson just might move up the ladder, is so he would be wise to get a QBs coach with experience in the pistol. I really feel if we are going to stick with Alex and Frank going forward someone needs to do a little thinking outside the box.
Your thoughts, please set flame throwers on stun.

chan gailey right? he's one of the more creative thinkers out there, interested to see if he can make it work up in buffalo with a couple decent weapons but a limited QB, similar situation to us. Bad start for him 1st week, although he was up against Nolan and Miami

Detroit Lions actually had used this formation multiple times against Chicago last week.

Another year/scheme for Alex Count me out! Honestly, if we're going with a new OC next year I have to assume Alex is not going to be here. At that point, I want a whole new coaching staff anyway. I wouldn't have been opposed if they would have tried this during the offseason.

I tell you I think it is more than a fad, it has all the elements needed to work at the pro level, with a QB like Troy Smith that can run a little, it would be cool. I think Crabs played out of the spread in collage as well, with so many collage teams running some kind of spread, it will have to make it to the NFL sooner or later, might as well try sooner we have all the personal.
