If we were "haunted" by our past that'd mean we were trying to stick with the WCO and build on things and win superbowls and the expectations were too much. IMO this team has gotten too far away from their past, the players from years ago don't come around often, the team doesn't use the offense that got them 5 SBs and the playoffs in 17/18 years, we don't have a great QB, we don't have a great offense, we've had instability as far as an offensive system goes which makes it hard for any of your offensive players to be great, we don't have a complete defense because we're still missing a great pass rusher or a shutdown corner(both of which we had in the 80s/90s when we won superbowls).

The 49ers have lost their identity. They were a team that was a great passing team and had good pass defenses. Now they're trying to be a team that runs the ball over and over and uses play action every now and then and field a great run defense lead by a middle linebacker. That sounds more like the 2000 Ravens or the 85 bears and we don't have the Ds that either of those teams did. Plus the 2000 ravens had a way better running game.

Exactly what he said...

No continuity killed our offensive ability. Picking a system which requires specific types of QBs was stupid when we had a #1 choice. Aaron Rogers would have been huge in a WCO in SF... But, we didn't have that system... Now we have to look for specific "digits" QBs. WCO is the most QB-friendly system out there... And we always had a good running game during those years.

The tools we have can still be used that way - we just need to (okay, I'll say it...) turf Alex, if we screws up over the next half season, or so.

It's almost like we were jealous of the ST.L Lamb's offense, so we tried to adopt it. We didn't have to take apart Mooch's system - just the team...
From another poster on these forums...:

Teams running the digit system on offense generally suffer from more delay penalties because it takes longer for their coaches to communicate the plays. The 49ers, San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders lead the NFL in quarterback delay penalties since 2005. All have run digit-system offenses some or most of the time since the 2005 season.
(ESPN analysis)

The digit system SUCKS. It's as ridiculous as the St. Louis Lambs...

we been haunted since the 2005 draft....
No. The only ones being haunted by Niners past are the fans.

Certainly not making excuses. What I see on the field is incompetence and wonder if mentally, they are in over their heads. You do realize that most of anything we do is 80% mental or more. Look at Tiger Woods. He was the best, now less than average? Is his loss becuase he sucks? No. It is because is is mental from his current challenges. Is it an excuse? Nope...he is a mental case. So my question is, is the 9r mystique a mental challenge for these guys?

Seriously? The only thing haunting us is the Yorks. That is a carryover from the past, perhaps the only one. It is the single most important problem for the Niners, but I don't think this is what you meant. Your question is absurd. Sorry, that's how I see it.

Not immediately....there was a calm before the storm. Walsh coming in as GM and quickly rebuilding the defense through the draft while also having the foresight to add Garcia buffered us for a few more seasons of respectability before the Yorks and front office completely dismantled it all.

The death knell of the 49ers was the firing of Steve Mariucci.
1) Bill Walsh could spot talent, most importantly, quarterback talent. Bill Walsh brought in Montana, Young, and even suggested Garcia. That is AMAZING.

2) Our current staff CANNOT spot quarterback talent.

We are haunted by lack of quarterback talent.
"Work ethic" does not win championships.

He sees s**t we dun't always seh.

Lol that was a good movie!
We need to exorcise the ghosts of the past by GOING to the past. It is common knowledge that there are volumes and volumes of taped practices in our possession of us displaying the WCO, with the great ones as the participants. IT does not get better that that! Someone on a huge ego trip bypassed that wealth of knowledge, tried to do it their own way to make a name for themselves, and, as a result, well, this is the result. A team in disarray with no identity.

Exactly, we aren't asking for 17 straight 10 win seasons how about one for starters?

Every team has it's ups and downs. The teams who are on top like the Saints, Patriots, Packers, etc spent decades on the bottom. GB didn't win a super bowl for 29 years. The Saints where horrible for decades and won their first SB since they started 42 years ago. There is a shift in power in divisions and conferences. Not that the pro bowl means a lot but I think the NFC won it 11/16 years... the AFC 6 of 7. Remember when the Rams where on top of our division for years? The Seahawks???

I can't think one NFL team that hasn't had a slump in their history. People need to realize that it's not like baseball where there is an unfair advantage. Over time teams that are bottom dwellers usually get back on their feet with high picks (if they work out). Teams on top eventually lose star players and fall back to earth. If you are successful other teams want your star players and great coaches and it is tough to keep a team/staff together. Eventually your staff is stripped and star players sign else where for big money.

So I know everyone wants every season to be successful but we had 16 seasons of 10+ wins. We had nearly two decades of winning football. We had to go down some time. We are on the way back up and it takes time. Most 49er fans are impatient because they either grew up in the "golden" era or first started following in the decline of the "golden" era and haven't seen winning football.

no, the niners are haunted by the dead plays in jimmy rayes playbook
When the 49ers were racking up championships most of out current players weren't born or were too young to know what was going on. It's also been shown time and time again that current players for the most part are unaware of the players that came before them. Sure they know who Rice, Lott, Montana and Young are, they also know they're records, but they don't care.

It's the fans that live in the past, not the players. The fans constantly compare current players to guys that played 15 - 20 years ago. A players might feel pressure to replace a teammate that recently left or retired, but not a guy that they watched playing as a kid.

You are right, but you have to actually work to get out of the losing era. If you look at horrible teams, the common theme is bad decisions in the front office. Matt Millen might be the shining example. We have our own set of debacles in the Erickson/Nolan/McClueless/Simpletary era. If you look at all great teams, it starts with a great GM/front office. A great GM would not have hired Nolan/Singletary/Raye etc. Nolan was a poor to middling DC. Singletary was clearly unqualified. Raye is a proven loser. It is funny to see how people focus on the little things when the real crux of the problem is in the front office.
Not sure how many players are haunted but a lot of fans are.
