But, it's also premature to throw Alex to the wolves...it was one game, there were a lot of problems not his doing. His numbers went south when Seattle got a sizeable lead and he was forced to pass. Their defense warmed up to that situation and made it tough on him. He can and needs to play better...I'm sure he'd agree with that. But, Crabtree really needs to pull his head out, too. Vernon and Morgan were the only reliable receivers on Sunday. Raye needs to quit being so predictable in his playcalling, too. And, the OL has to do a better job of getting a push so the run game can be effective...with that, we'll see a lot more play-action in the passing game which should result in some big plays.

Another boatload of Alexcuses.

Where have you been the last 6 years? It hasn't been just one game. We've witnessed way too much of this mediocrity.
To declare that we have the best set of WRs in years is perhaps wrong. Despite his aclaimed pedigree, I have not yet seen greatness in Crabtree. Morgan, average at best. Zeigler, Ginn, Hill - guys with promise and potential but not in the same catagory of WRs that you see in the top teams.
Alex may have limited ability, but his performance would be much better if he had a couple of top-flight, veteran WRs like Aaron Rodgers has the privileged of working with.
So go ahead and fantasize about the 49ers getting a first class QB (where is he coming from?). Then consider how this really ggod QB will perform with WRs that do not run good routes, who do not get separation and who drop balls on a regular basis.
Tick, Tick, Tick, clock is ticking and unless Alex Smith comes up with some stellar performances, there will be NO re-negotiation of his contract. Alex Smith die hard followers can make all the excuses they want and it won't make a bit of difference.

Most likely Mike Singletary and Jimmy Raye will follow. Mike can blame no one but himself for picking an Offensive coordinator without a winning record. A run oriented coach when the emphasis today is in the passing game.

It's beginning to look like the SWAN song for both Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary is: I did it MY way! YUP and look where it's gotten you?

The smart thing that Singletary could have done is pick up McNabb or even an aging Jeff Garcia. However he has chosen to put all his eggs in one basket which is never a good thing! Tick, tick, tick!

Alexcuses.

First, we had to get him an O-line, now our receivers aren't good enough.

Next, Gore will be too old and slow.

if alex smith fails (90% chance he will) then we will be the Vikings basically with no Favre.

oh how i wish we got McNabb and drafted Clausen

Some people will never realize that Alex Smith is a dud. He's been here long enough. He doesn't have what it takes to win in the NFL. When will you people admit? Then they bring Carr in, another bust. Then cut Davis and bring in another Smith, who doesn't even know the playbook. They don't know what they are doing. Dead from the neck up. Always making excuses for Alex Smith.

The reality for this season is that David Carr has kicked around through several teams because he is not very good. Hold the ball far too long, is indecisive, did not look good in TC, and Troy Smith doesn't know the playbook yet and was released by a contender because he wasn't good enough to even take a position as the #3.

All that means that Alex Smith is the QB for the 49ers for this season. Like it or not.

To make matters worse, the 49ers have a prima donna WR who hasn't done enough work to earn a starting spot, Josh Morgan who is a much better blocker than a WR threat, and now three other guys who were on waivers and no one else wanted them. That leaves Vernon Davis as the only legit threat in the passing game, with a wee bit of help from Delanie Walker who has been hot and cold in his career.

And worst of all, the team has an OC who is calling plays from his Back to the Future time machine headquarters.

Does that just about sum it up?

Nope. Not conviced at all by our arguement. This team had better options and did not take them and has a better option on the bench but the coaching staff does not communicate the plays well enough and thus blame him for not knowing the plays. Now isn't that poetic justice? Publically humiliate someone for not knowin the plays and not only don't you understand them, but your OC can't clearly convey them. There is something very wrong with this picture.

If you are referring to Nate Davis, let me remind you he made mistakes on many plays when he did play. I won't even open that discussion again.

You can open it up as much as you want. What? he didn't run the the first down and is being compared to a QB who will throw a 2 yard pass when the team needs nine for the 1st? What other mistakes can YOU detail? Can you detail mistakes other than from those stated by a head coach who don't know as many play as he does and relies upon an OC who can't articulate them? And I don't care what he doesn't know. He still performs better than Carr with what he knows and is a better playmaker than Alex. When will someone start doing some real coaching and do what is necessary to prepare players as opposed to sounding stupid at the podium. This communications revelation makes Sing and the coaching staff sound really stupid gven that on the other hand they used the podium to ridicule Davis and Crabtree.

There is no doubt that there is a complete lack of offensive coaching ability with this team. From what I can see, a good part of the problem with the passing game is that receivers are running solo routes much of the time. Whether that is by design or lack of execution, there is none of the "influence" routes that you see in good passing teams.

One specific example that puzzled me: Last year when VD ran a deep middle route, there was always a second receiver who ran deep also to occupy a safety leaving Vernon one-on-one. Sunday, on the one deep pass to Davis that misfired, VD was the only receiver on the route and the DB behind him had him cut off from getting to the ball. Now I don't know if he could have caught it anyway but that was either a poorly designed play, or another receiver blew his assignment. Either way, there was a failure related to coaching and/or play design.

Those are the kind of things that tell me that there is more to the failure of this offense than just Smith.
