Others on this board didn't see the potential, are staunch Smith supporters or just simply didn't care one way or another.

But now that Davis was released, it's turned into a circus.

Extremists on both sides are stating their cases, like only extremists do.

~"Davis sucks! He NEVER would've turned into ANYTHING!"
~"Davis is LAZY and RETARDED...anyone who wants a LAZY and RETARDED QB on their team is pathetic!"
~"Our future is doomed without Davis! He was the next Joe, the next Steve...and now he's gone!"
~"He was the best QB on the team...I hope Seattle picks him up and he beats us for years!"

By most expert accounts/scouts that saw Davis before the 2009 draft, and from what he displayed in last year's pre-season, Davis has a lot of potential. He has a big arm, shows nice poise in the pocket and seems to have a knack for hitting receivers while on the run (all very good qualities for a starting NFL QB, and things you simply can't teach at the NFL level...you either come with those skills or you don't).

AND, he also comes with HUGE concerns (ability to pick up a pro-style offense, true dedication to the QB craft, decision-making ability in the pocket, etc.), which is why he dropped to the 5th round after being considered one of the better QB prospects at the midway point of the 2009 college season.

So (extremists on both sides of the discussion excluded), the truth is that Davis showed flashes of brilliance and plenty of promise on the field, but didn't progress fast/consistently enough (in the classroom and on the field) to warrant further development by the 49ers.

So it's not that "he sucks," or that he's "retarded," or even that "our future is hopeless" now that Davis has been released. As usual, the truth is somewhere in between these extremes, with an obvious edge towards the opinion of "He's got talent, but RIGHT NOW, he's just not good enough to keep around on this 53-man roster."

As a fan of Davis, I can live with that last statement.
Very well said.
if he weren't so pudgy he might not be so lethargic about his work habits

close, but no cigar. Keep Sing out of it cause he is going nowhere and I'm on board.

Now, if we could only copy/paste those three sentences into the 1,283 Alex Smith threads and lock them "until further notice", we'd have less and a more serene Webzone where we'd discuss other topics like a big happy 49ers family.
Do you have a unibrow? If so...your development period can last centuries.
Don't have a unibrow? Well, you better show something in less than 2 years.

I truly believe Sing's future is tied to Smith's success.

With the high expectations placed on this team going in to the 2010 season, it's playoffs or bust for Smith/Singletary. If for some reason Alex goes down in flames by injury or bad play, the team will have to hand the reigns over to Carr, and that will very likely produce some EXTREMELY ugly results.

With the new stadium looming in the background, you can bet Jed will not be patient with either Smith or Sing if things go south, and will do whatever he has to do to keep momentum on his side.

Don't get me wrong, I pray for Smith and Sing to still be here next year, because that will mean we made the playoffs. But if we don't, you can rest assured that we'll bring in an offensive-minded head coach in 2011 (Chucky???), a new veteran QB to hold things down for a bit, then we'll draft our QB of the future with an eye towards keeping the vibe positive around here.

Singletary Convinced 49ers Have 3 NFL-Ready QBs

If Davis isn't plucked off the Waver Wire, Coach Sing wants to re-sign him to the practice squad. I for one would love to see that happen. Maybe the kid will get off his hind parts and take being an NFL QB seriously........

Alright goofball, let's review: You're the 1st pick in the daft and your agent just scored you an almost 50 million dollar contract. That's a hella huge investment and consequently, you're afforded some time and patience to develop which incidentally takes several years to even get to that point because your coach has his head up his hiney. On a positive note you have demonstrated a commitment to this team and your work ethic is unquestioned and you restructured your contract because you're a stand up guy. Coaches really appreciate that kind of thing from their players. Not sure why but they just do. In summary: Top draft pick x massive salary = huge loss if it doesn't pan out.

You're a 5th round draft pick and have been signed at a minimum salary. The coaches are intrigued with your arm strength but concerned about your dyslexia. Nevertheless you get a shot to show the coaches that you, your learning disability and you're big arm are better than the spot you were drafted in. After 1 full season and 2 off seasons all you have shown is that you are blessed with a shoddy and unprofessional work ethic and have made no discernible improvement over last year. Coaches really frown on this sort of thing. Not sure why, but they just do. In summary: 5th round pick x minimal salary = not a huge loss if it doesn't work out. See the difference?

All you Nate Davis lovers relax. By tomorrow, he'll likely be back on our team as a practice squad player where he'll be free to play WR and such.

I have to disagree. This is the first year in 8 years that this team finally has a "positive vibe" and it would be stupid for York to derail the popular Singletary train after just 2 years. Smith or not, Sing gets at least another year or two. Only then would his job be in jeopardy.

On the flip side; having Chucky, or The Chin, or even Billick would be pretty sexy.

I reckon it depends on bad the season goes downhill in that case.

Although, I think that Singletary is a very unique coach - for better or for worse.

Things have a funny way of changing (and changing quickly) in the NFL...if by chance the train falls of the tracks in 2010, you can bet Singletary will not be very popular around these parts by the end of the year. Remember, Nolan was the savior after the 2006 season. By the end of 2007, he was the devil incarnate, and by mid-2008, he was out.

Well stated...

Now, can you help us by assessing the A. Smith situation next.

~Alex Smith is the unquestioned starter of this team (for good or for bad)
~If he doesn't lead this team to the playoffs, he's gone after the season and so is Singletary
~If he leads this team to the playoffs, he'll either be re-signed or franchised

close, but no cigar.

I don't know. I think Sing is safe until we get a competent Qb. He has everything else. If Alex fails it wont be looked upon as Sings fault. Once a Qb comes in here and starts performing and we become a complete team, then I think Sing will be judged, but only until then.
sorry but i don't trust this organization evaluation of the QB position
I know the tandem nolan-McC is gone after we drafted smith over rodgers but now it's smith (the other one) over nate ... Wow !
Is it a waste to keep nate another year and see how he develops ? 3rd string QB's very rarely come to play for real. So i don't see what Troy gives us.
He's better prepared to play ? null
He won't take a snap all season and he'll probably be gone by next year
If sing goes on and on with those kind of decisions and it backfires ? I'll call for his firing
But first let's see what our special teams puts up in the coming games
It will be an indication of how sing's decisions can hurt us ...
