You know, it seems to me if they can sneak someone else through the waiver wire (I've got Khalif Mitchell as my 53rd guy) then you keep all 10 linemen to try to force a desperate club to make a trade for Sims or Snyder. You pick up a draft pick and then you bring that 53rd guy back.

Has there been any news on how Boone has performed? If he is average, then you have to keeps Sims, because he can play both RT and LT.

It is all about veratility and upside in my book. Sims has been great as a back up, but I think if Boone is cut, he will be picked up before he can be signed to the PS. or signed off of the PS.
I think the niners need to keep on 5 WR's and 9 OL, and 7 DL.
Staley Iupati Heitmann Rachal Davis
Boone, Wragge, Baas, Snyder, if they keep a 10th go for sims.

I wouldn't mind trading him to a "win now" team like SD. They could potentially give us the highest draft pick for him. But I think their GM is a prude and won't give up much.
Another option is Seattle, McClueless saw in person how well Sims played, but do they wanna take their lumps this year rather than giving up another draft pick? Same deal with the Rams.
Our best option is to try and trade him to a "win now" team that saw how well he filled in for Staley last year. But that's a hard sell with Boone now in the fold. Do we keep a solid backup in Sims for one year, or do we keep the guy with the potential to be a very solid backup for an entire career and maybe even provide more trade value later on in Boone.

The last OL roster spot has to be between Sims and Boone. If it came between the two, I think the coaching staff will likely select Sims for the roster spot because:
1. Sims is a proven veteran and has started in the league before
2. Boone is still practice squad eligible
The only way I see them picking Boone is if they feel that he's good enough where another team might pick him up if left in the practice squad.
My $0.02

Hi Matt, Other than the current injury report I don't recall hearing anything about how Barry Sims has been performing in camp. There is talk that either Sims or Boone will be cut to get the roster to 53 and I was wondering how that competition has been shaping up. Thanks! SFAddict

Barry Sims is one of those players the 49ers did not need to see. They know exactly what he can do. So they wanted to see some of the other players, such as Alex Boone, to determine whether he's at Sims' level or not. --Matt M.

I wonder why he doesn't say how he thinks the competition is going? Perhaps he knows the inside scoop, but can't divulge that type of info prior to official statements or moves being made? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I can't see them cutting Sims at all. he should be the 1st guy off the bench if Staley goes down.

Exactly..His experience will help in case of an emergency, he played some hard nosed football last season, I am more comfortable with a proven veteran Tackle right now, especially if were trying to make the playoffs this year.

Boone is more athletic and better blocker IMO. I think the only advantage Sims has is experience. Losing a viable tackle like Boone for the safety of a socalled safe tackle is the sort of safe that made Nolan famous. Boone has looked good both left and right tackle and is prone to some errors but our first pick makes more. If that were the criteria Sims would be replacing Anthony Davis. Sims gets tossed around a lot and is not much of a run blocker. He is dogged and sticks to a pass rusher but I know I would
never keep him if losing Boone were the option. I think the better option might be putting Heitmann on IR for the year and get his legs back because the last leg break really cost him his performance and noticeable vs guys like Baas. Look how long it took to find a tackle and because of a backup who the Raiders got rid of for Kwame is replacing a tackle who has looked good? If I made decisions that wise I would take over for McCloughan.

I don't think it is a competition. It seems more of a question of does Boone stay up or go to the Practice Squad. Sims isn't going anywhere due to his performance last year. With the two kids on the squad, Sims is the ideal guy as a backup. If anything he is the 6th lineman out of 10.

Did you read Barrows article about the position battles? Denver let a rook OT go and 3 teams tried to claim him. Boone won't get through waivers. He is a viable backup right now at LT or RT and has nothing but upside.
There are definitely other guys at less valued positions who can be moved to PS so we don't have to risk losing Boone. FB's Miller and Caulcrick, DL Tukuafu and Mitchell, and S Taylor to name a few.

I know it might sound dumb, but I'd rather have Sims as a backup OT than Snyder
The only plus I see with Snyder is that he can also play guard, BUT Sims can play both sides of OT.
I would prefer to keep Simms over Snyder also.

If teams are desperate for an OT, offer the pick of Sims or Boone for a 6th or 7th round draft pick. The team low on the waiver claim probably would bite if they truly need an OT. The Niners cut an OT who the panthers claimed, and he chose to retire instead.
