Am I reading the above correctly?
Quote:
Pressures: Iupati 2.5, Staley 1, Davis 1, Rachal 1

We've gone against two teams with basic 4-3 defenses. Wait until we go against a 3-4 defense and watch that pressure number go up.

Maddog's head will explode but, fortunately, it is mostly correct.
One particular play for example, where the linebacker rushed straight up the middle was completely Iupati's fault. Iupati has a good chance to be an All-Pro this year, but it was still his fault on that one. He vacated his position to help block Staley's man on the edge, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the line.
Baas was blocking a man who was stunting from his LEFT, and had no responsibility whatsoever for that player.
There was one time in the game where Baas was overaggressive and one of the Williams's pulled him forward and got around him, he probably deserved a pressure for that. But that's IT.

It was written by Kevin Lynch, therefore I shall ignore.

I like Heitmann and distrust Baas's ability to do the job, but this is impressive. Time will tell but I am a team supporter not individual players.
Considering where we were with the line, this is nice. It's preseason etc etc, but still nice

That's all fine and dandy in Preseason. I'll wait till teams start stunting their DL, disguising their blitz's, and playing a full game before I crown Baas a boss.

The Vikings ran a double blitz on the right side of the line that was picked up beautifully. I do agree we need to see this consistantly. However if the Oline keeps making progress by week 3 or 4 Baas will remain the starter

I have said this on a lot of occasions when Heittman kept getting praise yet our protection or push up the middle was lacking: the Center can hide much easier than the other OL. Unless you're a 49ers coach or player who knows the blocking assignments against the defense for each play, then you are in no place to assume who was at fault for the missed block.
I'm all for Baas and don't feel that Heittman can help this OL dominate but I still feel that these observations are not as accurate as they may be.
The Guards and Center rely heavily on combo blocks and who knows who was at fault. All I know is that Baas at Center has provided us with better blocking and space for the QB and RB than we have seen in a long time.
Remember, we were never able to move the line at the Center spot in preseason before this year, even with Larry Allen because Heittman would get stood up and pushed back or no movement at all.

I agree with this. Heitmann was more of a technician and also provided leadership on the line by making the correct calls. With Baas in there, we've got three big uglies who can move the pile and get that crucial 3rd-and-short converted into a first down.

Good post, nice reasoning. And I have made the same observations you have that you noted in your last paragraph.

Not here to take shots at Heitmann... Bass... MD... whatever, don't care. I think the goal should be less personal and more about our true take on improving the team?
After just watching the 2nd quarter offense, I can assure you that Baas struggled in that quarter. On the 3rd to last offensive play (2nd and 8 play), Baas should easily have been credited with a pressure allowed. I guess the reason he was not... was that it went to either rookie, who also badly fudged on their blocking assignment.
Look, considering that Baas has a very shaky bunch of OL around him? Considering that Baas is playing center for the first time in years? Yeah, he's doing a servicable job. So far though, he's not looking beyond reproach, and this "power blocking" up front is still not really happening for us. The Vikes see to be daring us to throw deep by loading the box often. We gotta start taking shots deeper downfield... but we gotta get better OL protection to even do that.

All things considered, Baas is doing fine. Nobody can expect him to be as technically sound as Heitmann...he simply doesn't have EH's experience. I do agree he's a better straight-ahead blocker, though. He's a powerful dude, while Heitmann's more of a finesse player. Both have strong attributes and that bodes well for our OL. Both Iupati and Rachal have to improve...and they should, especially under the tutelage of Solari and Brown. When that happens, our interior OL will be a lot stronger. But all of this is going to take some time...we have to remember 3/5 of our OL is new, or at new positions.

Ok but a good argument can be made for the front seven of Minn being pretty effing good...
