What would it take to extend Alex Smith's contract? If this is truly his make or break year than his performance will definitely be a deciding factor.
Its all bout the Trophys...the closer we get to that, the BETTER

We'll all know if he is our guy or not by the end of this season. Our eyes won't lie and his play on Sundays will tell the entire story. We won't need stats, records, or playoff appearances to know if Smith is our guying heading into next season or not, it will come down to whether he can make plays when we need him to make plays. If he can't get it done, the coaches will thank him for his hard work and commitment, and then say goodbye.
If that's the case, we might as well cut his ass right now.
He has made plays for us when we needed them in the past. At the same time, he has also let us down. So no, we don't know at this point.

My prediction: Alex does NOT get resigned this year, and he is picked up by the Seahawks, by trade (if possible) or by FA after the season is over.

I have a feeling he won't have to do any of that. This club seems scared to address the starting QB position and usually sticks with what they've got. If Smith has another mediocre showing, he'll be re-signed next season. How well he does this season will only decide how MUCH they'll offer him.
The only way he doesn't get re-signed is if he puts up JaMarcus Russell-like numbers from last season.

Felt this picture was appropriate for this thread. Slapped it together a while ago just for shiggles.
the big pic looks like he just threw a pic lol. gotta find a pic of him doing something heroic or slap on that badass phil jennings pic lol
I thought he was having a private conversation with his Junk... "no little smith, not here, not now..."
Both pictures were actually taken at the Colts preseason game. The big one was during pregame warm-ups.

Hall of Fame.
That's what it would take in the eyes of many 9er fans. They could care less about winning now. They want the man gone, even if it meant we would be on another 5 year track.
However, why is this even a thread now? Let's revisit this mid way through the season or even at the end of it.
