After watching Dixon juke 3 defenders in one play, get around the edge with speed, stiff arm and bang defenders to the ground, you can't seriously compare him to Coffee.
Coffee played the Raiders venerable rush defense last year, and didn't do anything close to what Dixon did.
I'll say this though. A lot of Dixon's runs straight up the middle were not successful due to his effort, but rather the great push provided by the o-line. Off-tackle, or around the edge, Dixon was amazing; but up the middle, he was just OK.
I can see why the coaches were critical of him when it comes to finding the right spots up the middle. He is a little impatient.

Once again, a rookie 49ers RB leads the preseason in rushing

Yeah there were a couple runs where he got to the hole and busted through but if he took an angle like Gore takes the LB could of only taken him down with an arm tackle (which he probly would of broken) but instead the LB was able to get his body in front of him in time. But he is still good for a solid 4 yards a carry which is what we need when Gore comes out.

LOL @ "the Pope"...
In all seriousness, as a pure runner, Dixon is head and shoulders above Coffee, Sheets and especially Clayton.
I never once trusted any of those guys to take over for Gore. When Coffee actually did sub for Gore in the regular season, he looked like he had already lost interest in football.
Dixon looked like a bigger version of Gore out there on Sunday. Strong, determined, nifty. He seemed to have it all. He does still need to learn the offense and protections.
Let's just hope it translates to the regular season.

And for the 2nd year in a row it will mean nothing in the regular season.

Exactly. I remember when we ran the ball up and down the field against Oakland in preseason and everyone thought we had a dominate rushing game. But we all know how that panned out.

I just saw a post by Kevin Lynch of the Chron where he said:
"(C)oaches kept trying to get rookie running back Anthony Dixon to get upfield fast. They should leave him alone, he has a inner sense of when to stop and start. His patience was most impressive;"

I agree with Lynch. They ought to leave his running style alone.
Furthermore, who cares if he's not the perfect pass-blocker . . . put a fullback in there to block. Besides, we have lots of players who aren't perfect at blocking.
But this kid can really RUN the ball.

And he can catch.
There is a huge difference between his production compared to Coffee's/Sheets/Clayton's production. Dixon earned his yardage with good patience, vision and acceleration. The other guys were products of running in one direction against scrubs through large lanes.

Beware of preseason success. Let's keep it measured. If you think Seattle won't be ready to play week 1, then we are seriously overestimating our abilities.
I am with you on that , I expect another tough game at Quest.

f**k THAT. I'm fully expecting us to come out in the first 30 minutes next Sunday GUNS BLAZING. The Seahawks are the same trash this season they were last.
I fully expect the Seattle game to be won by halftime. The 49ers have bigger fish to fry the week after on Monday Night Football. Seattle is just another exhibition to get out of the way.
